The European Union began officially supporting h**p cultivation in 1996. Under the Common Agricultural Policy, farmers growing approved low-THC h**p varieties are eligible for area-based subsidies just like wheat, flax or oats. To qualify, the crop must be listed in the EU plant variety database and contain no more than 0.3% THC.
This recognition helped revive the European h**p industry, especially in France, the Netherlands and parts of Eastern Europe. Today, h**p is grown across more than 20 EU countries for uses like textiles, construction, paper, food and bioplastics.
