The college laid off 20 full-time faculty on Tuesday, June 17, forcing the reassignment of dozens of fall courses. The move come as Columbia continues to adjust to lower enrollment and shifting academic needs, according to a college spokesperson. The college has laid off 43 full-time faculty in total this year, representing about 20% of all faculty.

The faculty members, who were already assigned fall courses, were summoned to brief virtual meetings and told their positions were eliminated on Tuesday, June 17. The layoffs are the second round this year in an ongoing effort to address the school’s budget deficit. In January, 23 full-time faculty were told they would lose their jobs at the end of the spring semester.
