A host of reasons but one powerful lesson is that many report that they would prefer to be in prison. Routine. No responsibility. Food. Less physical freedom, but more psychological freedom. I read a book about human status and a big part was the psychological element of being important and finding status within the prison system. On the outside, they’re a ‘criminal’ while on the inside they are respected internally and there is a hierarchy that feels possible to climb. We can copy this exact scenario onto our own lives where we box ourselves into situations that do not serve us.It might be scary to leave a job you hate but the carrot of being promoted and seen as important by colleagues keeps you stuck. The uncertainty of finding a new career makes the short term pain seem too much.You can apply this to relationships, jobs, travelling… we all have areas in our life where we convince ourselves that it’s too scary to jump.. so we stick around in places that no longer serve us.
