Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe State Council.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe State Council, extends heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, Hon. Dr. Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN (Chiroman Gujba), on the occasion of his 58th birthday. We celebrate his leadership, vision, and the tireless dedication he has shown to the citizens of Yobe State.

We also wish to commend Governor Buni for the remarkable developmental strides that have transformed our state particularly in:

- Infrastructure: Completion of key roads and bridges linking rural communities.
- Education: Construction of new schools and provision of scholarships.
- Health: Expansion of medical facilities and free maternal health programmes.
- Agriculture: Support for farmers through subsidised inputs and market access.

These achievements reflect his commitment to improving the welfare and prosperity of Yobe’s citizens.

On behalf of the NUJ Yobe State Council, we pray for His Excellency’s continued good health, wisdom, and success as he leads Yobe State to greater heights.

NUJ Yobe Council Condemns Police Brutality Against NTA reporter.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council strongly condemns the unprofessional conduct of CSP Zakari Deba, a police officer, Chief Security Officer (CSO) attached to Government House Damaturu who physically assaulted a reporter from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Damaturu on gaining access to the presentation of the 2026 budget at the Yobe State House of Assembly complex today.

We are deeply disturbed by this egregious act of violence against a media practitioner simply doing their job. Journalists are not enemies of progress; they are partners in nation-building, tasked with reporting facts to the public. Such attacks undermine press freedom and create a hostile environment for truth-telling.

The NUJ Yobe Council:
1. *Demands accountability: We call for immediate investigation by the Nigeria Police Force into this incident.
2. *Applauds NTA’s response*: We commend NTA Damaturu for promptly reporting the assault and urge authorities to act swiftly.
3. Urges respect for media: All security agencies must treat journalists with dignity. Press freedom is non-negotiable.

PRESS STATEMENT

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council strongly condemns the publication by Punch Online fabricating a rumor about an attack in Mafa community of Yobe State. This report is a blatant lie and utterly untrue. There was no such attack, and we are shocked by the recklessness and irresponsibility displayed by the publication.

The Dangers of publishing Unverified Reports can have far-reaching consequences, including spreading panic and misinformation.

The union has since directed the ethics and disciplinary committee to invite the punch reporter, Mr Kagana Amshi for investigation on his report.

We urge all journalists to adhere to the principles of responsible journalism, verifying information before publication to avoid spreading falsehoods. The NUJ Yobe Council stands for truth, accuracy, and professionalism in journalism.

We call on Punch Online to retract the false report and issue a formal apology. We also urge the public to be cautious of such malicious publications and rely on verified sources of information.
