SENATE WEIGHS IN ON DUTERTE'S HOUSE ARREST 🤔
With 15 affirmative votes, three negative, and two abstentions, the Senate on Wednesday adopted a resolution urging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to allow house arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
While it conveys the Senate's opinion on the matter, it is not binding and bears no influence on Duterte's case, which is under the ICC's jurisdiction.
The Senate Resolution No. 144, introduced by Majority Leader Migz Zubiri and Minority Leader Alan Cayetano, states that the ICC is urged to designate a physician to examine Duterte and ensure that he is fit to withstand regular detention in view of his age and "deteriorating health."
Should medical findings prove that Duterte's continued detention will worsen his condition, the ICC is requested to hold the former president under house arrest.
The senators who voted "yes" were Cayetano, Zubiri, Bato Dela Rosa, Robin Padilla, B**g Go, Imee Marcos, Rodante Marcoleta, Jinggoy Estrada, Ping Lacson, Erwin Tulfo, Joel Villanueva, Sherwin Gatchalian, JV Ejercito, Loren Legarda, and Mark Villar.
Senators Risa Hontiveros, Kiko Pangilinan, and Bam Aquino voted against the resolution, while Senate President Tito Sotto III and Senator Raffy Tulfo abstained.
