Because I just learned she’s touring, and because I now have a controller that does Vocal, Instrumentation and Beats separation with stems that I’m learning in my awkward experimenting-is-fun way to utilize, I can safely predict that songs I grew up on like this one will be making their way into mashups over dark techno, ebm, industrial, witch house and glitch tracks (with love mind you, which means only if it reaaaaallly works well and preserves something of both vibes) as a staple of my sets. A couple weeks ago I mashed up Maenad Veyl and Reel 2 Real (I like to Move it move it! You know, the song the Lemur King sings and dances to in Madagascar 2) and it made me so happy that I still intend to re-record that set just to get that mashup recorded. That and Chappel Roan’s Hot To Go over dark techno from Chloe Lula. Which, I’d be mortified if Chloe Lula ever heard what I did to her gorgeous song, but it was just too fun to NOT do. Oh, and Qveen Herby and Tech N9ne over Louisahhh… that was stupidly fun too. Yeah, that set needs to be practiced more and recorded for posterity. Been out of commission for a couple weeks, but getting back at it. Long story short, I play mostly new music; I’m not a stuck in the 80’s goth or a stuck in the 90’s rivethead. But, there are classics. There are influential songs that should not be forgotten. Often there are modern covers or genre re-works that are fantastic (I’m thinking Bigod 20’s cover of Like a Prayer that made it industrial, or Pheobe Bridgers’ cover of Friday I’m in Love which you have to listen to at least once to have your cold heart poured over a sugar cube resting on a silver spoon into a Swarovski Crystal glass of absinthe). But, not all of these covers and updates are danceable, and stems will let people like me inject the old songs into the new stompy and writhey goodness. Not too much mind you, there’s a balance of new to old that I think definitely needs to swing heavily towards the new in the club (unless it’s specifically a nostalgia themed night). Anyhow, all of this is just to say classic songs like this one should not be forgotten, and I’m excited about the ability provided by stems technology to make it easier to bridge genres and eras. Now I just have to resist the urge to get carried away with it. Heheh.
