Listening to an audiobook is reading, not “cheating”!

People tell audiobook narrators, "You are good at that job because you can imitate anyone/you can do so many accents/you have a hundred different voices in your toolkit." While all the above are useful abilities, they are not what make a good narrator.

Yes, differentiating the various characters within a dialogue is important, so as not to confuse the listener. But different audiobook narrators have very different approaches to this task. One of the greatest audiobook narrators currently working in the US uses very subtle changes to express characters. So why is he so valued and how is he so good?

There is a saying that every person is the hero of his own story. The key to expressing a character is not to "play" the character--ie. just put on a voice and read the dialogue--but to actually embody the character, to walk in their shoes, to see the surrounding people and events through that character's eyes.

If a narrator can immerse herself into the book this fully, so can the reader.

That's how an audiobook becomes engrossing.

That's why human narrators will always be better than machine voices.
