A highlight from , the virtual audiobook narrators' convention I attended recently, was watching a coaching session with Paul Alan Ruben, a master legend in the business.

Paul didn't mess around with simple, obvious stuff. He jumped in deep right from the start. Some of his concepts were difficult to understand, but I feel that I came away with a clearer knowledge of what I have yet to achieve.

He made some profound and powerful statements:

"Keeping performance human means you are recreating real life. You are not sounding like you are presenting or reading."

"A narration career is 100% based on acting, 0% on voice quality."

"A storyteller is discovering the story as it goes."

"A narrator's job is to give back what the subtext is giving me."

These truths are what set the standards for the industry and can carve a trail for any narrator's career.
