The Mayor Mohammad Hanif Jame Mosque, located adjacent to the Azimpur Graveyard in the Lalbagh District of Old Dhaka, is a modern threshold space designed as a departure from traditional mosques in both physical and philosophical designs.
With its terracotta brick exterior and post-and-lintel structural system, the building is functionally resistant to Dhaka’s variable climate and potential seismic activity.
The mosque’s interiors are designed with strategically placed openings to allow wind to easily flow through and keep its halls naturally ventilated. In addition to its spiritual and functional value as a modern mosque, the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Jame Mosque also holds great political value for Dhaka city, as it was constructed in the face of great pushback from those in power within the city.

Apart from their main function of being the centre of worship, mosques are also used for mourning events such as ashura, and as they are usually large spaces, they have played an important role in protest rallies and sit-ins throughout Iran’s history. Because of this, mosques in Iran have not only been religious centres, but also political and social centres.
