From above, this volcano looks like something out of a nightmare. The cracks of molten lava formed what resembles a fiery skull staring back at the world, but in reality, it is an aerial view of Iceland’s volcanic landscape, captured by photographer Daniel Viñé García.
What makes this image extraordinary is how fleeting it truly was — lava constantly shifts, hardens, and breaks apart, meaning this fiery skull may have only existed for a few minutes before disappearing forever.
Iceland is home to more than 30 active volcanic systems, making it one of the most geologically restless places on Earth. The island sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are pulling apart, creating a hotspot for eruptions.
This haunting sight is a reminder that Iceland’s beauty is born from fire, ice, and constant change — and sometimes, in the chaos of nature, we catch a glimpse of something that feels almost alive. 🌋🔥
