On Sunday Chris went back to the beautiful Mariefred (more pictures later in the week!) and whilst on the steam train he went past a plaque dedicated to the Polish submariners who were interned there during WW2. The other side of the tracks is the place where the boats were kept.

Our 13th special episode covered the amazing story of these submariners, just one of many stories of incredible Polish deeds during the war.

If you haven't checked it out yet, it is there waiting for you!

In episode 95 we talk about the Danish flagship Gribshunden that sank just off the coast of Blekinge in modern day Sweden.

Thanks to it being so well preserved, it is still teaching us new things today, as this article in the magazine Svensk Historia explains:
https://svenskhistoria.se/gribshundens-artilleri-ger-ny-kunskap-om-kolonialisering/

Among other things, recent studies conclude that Gribshunden's cannons were intended to be used to fire against individuals, to kill off the crew of enemy ships before boarding them.

Right now, the over 110-year-old church in the norhern Swedish town of Kiruna is being moved. It's quite the endeavour to preserve this culturally, historically, and spiritually important building in the face of new city planning due to expanded mining in the area ⛪️

You can read more about it (in English) in this article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cde3xp4xlw9o

Or why not watch the move as it happens online through some classic Swedish public service slow tv: https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/norrbotten/folj-flytten-av-kiruna-kyrka-har

Chris also stepped back in time to visit the 17th century New Älvsborg Fortress whilst in Gothenburg!

Once a guardian against Danish attacks, today it’s a living reminder of 17th-century naval history. You can even still see the cannonballs in the tower wall from a Danish assault! The Danes attacked in 1719 and the remains are still visible, inside and out.

One cannonball got into the base of the tower which was used as a church and struck a metal plaque, whilst most of the rest are still embedded in the wall outside!

The fort itself guards the entrance to Gothenburg and covers the entire small island it is on, meaning it could fire on ships sailing down the river with cannons on all sides.

An amazing place and well worth a visit

Chris is in Gothenburg and has been to the ship of the same name!

The ship, also known as the Götheborg, is a full-scale replica of an 18th-century Swedish East India Company vessel that sank outside the city in 1745.

The current ship was built using traditional methods and is actually the world's largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship. The replica was launched in 2003 and has since completed several expeditions, including a journey to China.

It actually because quite famous a few years ago when it stopped to help a sailing boat that gotten into trouble!

This Sunday we will see the reign of Johan I, probably the most successful baby we've seen so far 👶 If you remember back a few episodes, Johan's father Sverker II made him the Jarl when he was just one year old!

His father was then kicked off the throne by Erik X, but now he has all the power, how will it go for Johan?

Coins have returned recently to our Kingdom episodes and that means we got to rank Sverker II's coins in his recent episode to see if he got any Carving Their Runestone points.

We're back with a new ranking episode of Kingdom tomorrow and it's going to be fun!

We already saw last time how Erik managed to kick Sverker II off the throne to violently bring back the Erik dynasty. But what will happen in the rest of his reign and how will we score him?
