Over 17,000 women trained, paid ₹36 Cr stipend in last 4 yrs

SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 22 – The world-famous handicraft and handloom products worth ₹2,567 crore have been exported from Kashmir valley in the last two financial years and the first three quarters of the current fiscal.

However, the exports in the current financial year have been hit by global conflicts.

Giving details, a spokesperson of the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kashmir, hoped that the exports are expected to touch cumulatively ₹3000 crore for 3 years, by the end of the last quarter of the CFY.

As per the figures available with the Department, while Kani and Sozni shawls lead exports worth ₹1105 crore, hand-knotted carpet exports stood at ₹728 crore in the last three years. The other products exported include crewel, papier mache, chain stitch and wood carving.

The spokesman further stated that the Department shall facilitate export of hand-made Kashmir products for which a subsidy scheme is available, giving incentive of 10% of the total volume of handloom/ handicraft export products to any country with maximum reimbursement up to ₹5 crore in favour of the eligible exporters registered with the Department,” he added.

Highlighting the Government’s strategy for welfare of artisan community, the spokesman said the Department has a well-established Design Studio in the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology and unique prototypes conceived by the School of Designs and Craft Development Institute. “The artisans can access these contemporary designs and packaging models to add value to their products in niche high-end markets,” he added.

For welfare of artisans, the Department has several flagship schemes in operation including Credit Card Scheme, Mudra, Financial Assistance Scheme for Cooperatives, Karkhandar Scheme and Education Scholarship for the children of craftsmen.

Under the National Wool Policy, the department has selected 100 weaver beneficiaries for distribution of free modified modern steel carpet looms in Kashmir ata total cost of Rs.43.70 lakh and the department will pitch for another 250 improvised looms for distribution in the next financial year.

Emphasizing upon the department’s focus on testing and QR coding of GI registered craft products to w**d out sale of counterfeit products, the spokesperson stated that the department has augmented manpower and equipment at its premier Pashmina Testing and Quality Certification Centre (PTQCC) and IICT lab for carpets. “The waitlist of 6 craft products including Sozni, Kani, Walnut Wood Carving, Khatamband, Papier Mache and Kashmir Pashmina at PTQCC has come down from 1700 on February 5 to 671 as on February 21, after strengthening of manpower,” he said, adding that the lab will be further strengthened after more staff shall undergo necessary training at the Wool Research Association, Thane.

He further stated that the proposal for additional equipment including Scanning Electron Microscope and a Digital Microscope have been submitted in the Union Ministry of Textiles, which shall further enhance the speed of testing and certification in PTQCC.

Laying stress upon promotion of training of female artisans, the spokesman stated that as many as 17,182 women have been trained in various crafts at 432 Elementary and Advanced Training Centres of the Department in the last 4 years. “Stipend to the tune of ₹36.27 crore has also been disbursed amongst these trainees,” he said, while describing training as the core activity of the Department, aimed at linking them with master craftsmen under the Karkandhar Scheme.

*Elected J&K Govt needs to create more awareness about new criminal laws: Omar Abdullah*

*“No discussion on security situation in today’s meeting; J&K has done better in implementing new laws”*

New Delhi, Feb 18 Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that implementing three new criminal laws is not the mandate of the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, but the dispensation led by him needs to do more to create awareness about these provisions.

Talking to reporters here after attending a meeting called by Home Minister Amit Shah to review the implementation of the new criminal laws, Omar said, "As far as the elected government is concerned, it is not our responsibility to implement these laws. Since these are new laws, people should be aware of them. For this, the elected government needs to do more," he said.

The CM added that J&K has done better in implementation but there are few weak areas which need to be fixed.

Omar, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said there was no discussion on security situation in Jammu & Kashmir during today’s meeting.

“I had discussed security matters relating to J&K during my recent meeting with HM (Amit Shah) on Parliament premises,” Omar said.

Omar expresses inability to comment on his exclusion from security reviews relating to the Union Territory.

“There is a difference between this meeting and those meetings. This meeting was about new laws and their implementation. If the decision has been made to exclude representatives elected by the people from security issues, what more can I say?" he said.

On the reaction of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, Omar said, “The LoP has the right to dissent in the selection meeting. Opposition does not need to always agree with the government. The matter (relating to the constitution of the selection committee for picking the CEC and election commissioners) is sub-judice in the Supreme Court.”

The high-level meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister to review the implementation of new criminal laws in Jammu & Kashmir was also attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and top officials from the central and J&K governments.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 after new criminal laws came into effect from July 1 last year—(KNO)

BJP Chief Spokesperson Advocate Sunil Sethi Addresses Press Conference at BJP Head Headquarters in Srinagarr.

Srinagar, 10, Feb 2025– BJP Chief Spokesperson Sunil Sethi today addressed a press conference at the BJP Headquaters J-53 Jawagar Nagar Srinagar, where he highlighted the party’s recent win in the Delhi Assembly Election 2025 and underscored the critical importance of delivering on manifesto promises.

“Delhi’s verdict is clear – governments that fail to keep the promises they make in their manifestos are ultimately rejected by the people,” Sethi stated. “The outcome of the Delhi elections is a testament to the fact that when promises remain unfulfilled, voters do not hesitate to choose an alternative.”

Sethi further contrasted this with the performance of the BJP in Jammu & Kashmir, noting that the party has successfully delivered on 95 promises made in its 2014 manifesto. “For the past 75 years, the politics of Jammu & Kashmir has deviated from the path of genuine development, leaving the people disillusioned by unkept promises,” he added.

The spokesperson also took aim at the National Conference (NC), criticizing its approach and broken promises. “The NC pledged benefits such as free electricity and ration for the people. Yet, in just over four months, these promises have not materialized. Clearly, the NC lacks a concrete roadmap to address the needs and aspirations of the people,” Sethi remarked.

Addressing concerns about the constitutional status of Jammu & Kashmir, Sethi affirmed, “Let me be clear – the Constitution in Jammu & Kashmir will not be made separate.” He reiterated the BJP’s commitment to continuing its developmental agenda and honoring the commitments made to the people.

Alongside Adv. Sunil Sethi, Party Spokesperson Altaf Thakur, Media Incharge Kashmir Sajid Yousuf Shah, and National Council Member Arif Raja were also present at the press briefing.
