Dwarka Bharti, who lives in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, makes shoes for a living, but he is known as a thoughtful and outspoken writer. After completing his 12th grade, he took over his father’s cobbler shop, yet his bond with books and ideas never faded.
He says, “I make shoes to run my household, and I write for peace of mind.”
His autobiography, "Ek Mochi Ka Adabi Zindaginama" ("A Cobbler’s Literary Life Story"), is not just the tale of his life but a testament to the struggles of an entire generation. Inspired by the writings of Dr. Surendra Agyat, he began his literary journey and translated Joothan into Punjabi.
He went on to write several impactful books and poems, including Dalit Darshan, Hindutva Ke Durg, and Mashaalchi.
Today, his poetry is part of the curriculum at IGNOU, and his autobiography is the subject of academic research at Punjab University. Bharti continues to work in his small shop, where he not only makes shoes but also reads and writes. Literature enthusiasts arrive in luxury cars to visit him. He believes no work is small—what matters is the intention behind it.
Our salute to such a grounded and inspiring writer.
