For the new episode of One Step Beyond, the first of 2024, I wanted to focus on wildlife, specifically the elephant, arguably the most incredible, beautiful, intelligent, empathetic - and necessary - animal on the planet. Necessary? Yes, it is a "keystone species." To understand more about them, and how we save them from extinction, I spoke to Patricia Sims, founder of World Elephant Day, and director/producer of the documentaries When Elephants Were Young and Return To The Forest. Photo #1 here is of African elephants in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania, as witnessed on Feb 6 2016; photo #2 of the "Government Elephant Ride" we took in Chitwan National Park in Nepal, on April 3 the same year. On the show, I discuss if it is EVER appropriate to take an elephant ride and for the record, I would not do so again.
