Pretoria Court Schedules August 15 Hearing on Lungu Family’s Appeal Bid

The Pretoria High Court has set Friday, August 15, 2025, as the date to hear the Lungu family’s application for leave to appeal a recent court order mandating the repatriation of Mr. Lungu’s body to Zambia for a state funeral.

In a notice issued by the court, all involved parties have been instructed to submit the necessary documents, including potential heads of argument, no later than 15:00 on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

The appeal follows a ruling on August 8, 2025, in which the Zambian government won a legal battle allowing them to take custody of Mr. Lungu’s remains. He passed away on June 5, 2025.

The Lungu family, opposing the court's decision, filed for permission to appeal, which has temporarily halted the repatriation process. Until the appeal is resolved, the original court order remains unenforceable.

Should the family’s appeal be denied, Mr. Lungu’s body will be returned to Zambia. If the appeal is allowed to proceed, the repatriation will remain on hold pending further legal proceedings
