Getting into University is one thing, staying in university is another.

Prior to starting our first year in university, I am sure all of us, if not most of us had plans. Plans like making it on the deans list and getting distinctions every semester, or going on road trips to the lake every weekend. Others even had plans to start dating once they got to university (All girls secondary school boarders, how are you?).

Regardless of what we had planned, I am quite certain that not all of our expectations were met. Let’s dwell on our academic expectations for instance. No one, not a single individual, planned to go to university to fail (unless otherwise). However, we still find ourselves failing at one point or the other, either in our given assignments or in our end of year examinations. Depending on the number of modules failed, we see others getting weeded, and others being given a chance to right their wrongs by writing supplementary exams.

Given what we know now, Lets talk about what keeps our eyes off the goal.

Why do you think we do not follow through with our plans? [Especially in the academic field]

Let’s help each other Do better and Be better.

MUBAS Students will no longer be applying for accommodation as has been the norm for the past decade or so. As communicated later last month, management thought it wise to adopt the electronic system of selecting students to be accommodated into the university’s hostels. The aim of this new system is to increase fairness and allow students that have never had this chance to experience it.
However, this has come with a major change not just on the selection of students to be accommodated by the college. Lecturers no longer have their privileges of giving in a name of a student (child) that should be accommodated. Indeed, this sounds like a good approach to improve fairness in selection for accommodation, doesn’t it? Considering the number of lecturers the MUBAS has, a huge number of students that were probably used to enjoying the comfort of the campus hostels have been shaken.
Members of the Students’ Union Committee, on the other hand, still have the privilege of being accommodated in the university’s hostels which comes as a bonus for the job. This will only apply during their term of office and once out, this privilege will no longer stand.
The MUBAS has finally followed some universities that are already used to this system like UNIMA and Bunda. This is just the beginning of such an adjustment and it is not all perfect. Our system is not as advanced to notify students that they will be accommodated by the college through their portal as UNIMA does. Hence, names of the students will be pasted on all places accessible by the students to check their names

ACCOMODATION ALLOCATION
Following the dissolving of UNIMA as a collection of Malawian Public Universities, the Polytechnic became independent. Now called The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, The Polytechnic management has abolished the manual application for the university’s hostel accommodation. According to the memo released on the 26th of August 2021, the aim of this transition is to improve efficiency in the allocation of students into the hostels.
The University will henceforth be selecting the additional students to be accommodated in its hostels electronically. This means that students will no longer apply for accommodation at the end of this semester per tradition. After the electronic selection, a list of the fortunate few will be released at the Porters Lodge and students will know whether they are in or not.

NyaLonje awards MUBAS Outstanding performers

As part of 50th anniversary celebrations in its partnership with MUBAS, Total Energies Malawi, on August 30, 2021, awarded outstanding MUBAS students in recognition of their best performance in the last academic year results.

The event which took place in the ODeL Auditorium was blessed with the presence of the Honourable Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje who was the guest of honour.

In her speech the honorable Minister, applauded Total Energies Malawi for their unwavering commitment to supporting outstanding students.

“I would like to thank Total Energies Malawi for awarding these students who have excelled in their different disciplines of programs they are taking. This is a huge motivation for the students to continue working hard and graduate with distinctions. I would also like to appeal to all stakeholders and various organisations to emulate the gesture,” she said.

Each of the awardees received a certificate and a cheque worth K324, 000.

Speaking during the event, Executive Vice President responsible for Southern Africa Zone Mariam Cane Garcia said they are pleased to have such partnership with MUBAS which has existed since 1970. She further said that her organisation is looking forward to offering more scholarships to more students.

“We have taken note of challenges being faced by students at MUBAS, especially because of COVID-19 which has changed the rules of the game. We are going to extend the scope of this long-lasting program such that best students will be awarded scholarships” said Garcia in part.

Dr. Nancy Chitera thanked Total Energies for the gesture which has been going on for so many years. She also expressed gratitude to the honourable minister Nyalonje for gracing the occasion. Dr Chitera encouraged the awardees to work extra hard in order to graduate with the best grades and be performers in the industry which underscores what MUBAS’ vision is all about.

For those who were in attendance, the festivities that took place at the cultural night event formed memories that will forever be engrained in their minds and hearts. But for those that weren’t in attendance, here’s a quick recap of all the colorful and dare I say, culture-filled events that took place at the cultural event.
The MUBAS-St Augustine CSO really outdid themselves with the entertainment and activities that they organized for the event. They presented a wide range of traditional dances which included manganje, chitelela and beni. But that’s not all, they also organized a mock wedding as well as a gule wankulu performance.
As entertaining as all these activities were, the highlight of the night was undoubtedly the arrival of the special guest Pemphero Mphande who won over the crowd with his highly anticipated presence and charismatic words.
Here you’ll find photos of some of the activities that took place at the event.

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has emerged victorious in a debate against The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences(MUBAS) by 36 points to 31.

The Europian Union, in association with Oxfam, ECAMA and LUANAR have implemented this debate as part of the project of the "Enhanced Evidence based research to inform policy decision making in Public Finance".

During the debate, The UNIMA students represented by; Jennifer Mwenebanda, Precious Bengo, Samuel Mphande and Fatso Makuluni , at the proposition team, stated that it would be best for the Government to continue with the Public Finance initiative but make necessary ammendments that accommodate the pandemic, instead of changing it entirely.

The MUBAS Students, represented by; Christina Mavuto, Martin Manyozo, Wongani Mhango and Alexa K Muonjeza, who were in opposition stated that the initiative is very slow, rigid, and it is not flexible, therefor it must be changed.

After the course of the debate, the judges expressed their observations on the reasoning and clarity of the participants. They also encouraged the MUBAS Students to not lose heart and later on Congratulated the UNIMA students for their victory.
