🧩To start, this game has an incredible theme and art style. It’s great to become characters like Blackbeard & Mary Read, hire some crew and start terrorising the seas after treasure. I love the artwork on the cards and characters especially. Keeping your crews morale high, your pirates dread full and your ship ready for combat feels so thematic!
🧩The game also is easy to pick up and feels like a solid medium weight euro game. Giving players the freedom to explore the seas and build their ships feels incredible. Gathering crew, preparing for battle and collecting treasure is all part of the pirate life!
🧩Combat is amazing here. You have 3 steps to take which feel like tests. First you need to make sure your dread is high (a good pirate needs to instil fear!) then you need to win the sea combat to wear the ship down and finally board it and fight with your crew! Along with rolling dice you will be using your crew abilities to help give you the edge in combat!
🧩The game could use a few extra pirates though. More crew and variations of their abilities might be a nice touch but these are only minor complaints.
🧩To summarise, this is a solid, medium weight euro game that’s extremely well designed. A fun, thematic pirate adventure that’s easy to learn and quick to play.
