President Cyril Ramaphosa recently greenlit the just transition framework, which under the Presidential climate commission sets out policy measures and undertakings by different social partners to minimize the social and economic impact of the shift away from fossil fuels.The framework underpins an agreement between South Africa the UK, US Germany, France, and the EU grant access to an $8.5 billion investment in a shift away from fossil fuels, as we can see their efforts to transform the South African economy into a greener economy.

⚡Brian Kamanzi is a Energy Policy Researcher . (He has also done work with the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research).
Brian Kamanzi holds a MSc - Dept of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town.

Brain’s interests include:Renewable energy, environmentalism, Just Transition frameworks, sustainable infrastructure and disaster relief.

_ Guest Speaker: Lungile Mashele

⚡Lungile is an energy economist with over 15 years’ experience!!
She started her career in the banking sector in corporate and business banking; after a short stint she decided to pursue a career in consulting to find her true passion. Thereafter she worked for various state-owned companies focused on energy.

She currently works for an institutional investor, providing technical due diligence for projects on the African continent.

Lungile also lectures at the University of Johannesburg and WITS business school and is a member of the South African Association of Energy Economics and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers. She also provides commentary on African energy matters across the globe.

We’re back with another Member Profile!

Today’s Featured member is Obakeng Moloabi.

Obakeng is director of project development for PGE (Pele Green Energy).

He holds a B. Com in Investment Management from the University of Johannesburg. Before the founding of Pele, Obakeng was an interest rate derivatives trader for Standard Bank with a focus on trading sovereign and utility debt.

Obakeng has been central to the development of Pele’s project pipeline, resulting in the investment in 1200 MW of power projects, ranging across renewable and traditional fuels technologies in South Africa and Mozambique. This success is on the back of high-quality relationships with a wide range of international energy companies, including Enel Green Power, ACWA Power, Gestamp Wind and Building Energy.

His current focus is on the development of projects that are developed and majority-owned by PGE. Obakeng is also the managing director of PGE subsidiary, Pele Natural Energy, responsible for growing the Group’s traditional fuel power business.

Meet the voices behind Episode 4

_ Host: Thando Lukuko

⚡Thando Lukuko Thando is the national node coordinator for the SA Climate Action Network.He studied Entrepreneurship at CPUT where he obtained his National Diploma in 2011, following which he worked in several start-ups in the minerals, logistics and textile sectors respectively.

Since 2014, Thando has been working at Project 90 by 2030, an energy and climate change NGO, as the Community Engagement Coordinator. He is responsible for developing and implementing interventions that build relationships between local government and underserved communities to improve service delivery.

His experience in stakeholder engagement is both local and international, and has created positive impacts and a visible change. He serves on the Fossil Free SA management committee and as a consultant to the Independent Electoral Commissions (IEC) conflict panelist.

⚡Thandile Chinyavanhu is an environmental and social activist.
She works as a climate and energy campaigner for Greenpeace Africa. She writes about public health, energy access, climate mitigation and the intersectionality of climate change, particularly its impacts on women of colour.

She is part of the Quote This Woman+ database of experts! They work towards ensuring gender diversity in the media and beyond, by curating a database of voices like hers for journalists to use when they need an expert opinion.

Meet the voices behind Episode 3

_ Guest Speaker: Tasneem Essop

⚡Happy Khambule is part of the inaugural President's Coordinating Commission on Climate Change (PCC) and acts as Business Unity South Africa’s head of environment and energy. He also serves on the Paris Agreement Compliance Committee. He is a non-executive director in Mansa Advisory, he serves on various boards including on the Earthlife Africa board and the CleanCity SA board as an independent non-executive board chairperson.

⚡Tasneem Essop is an expert on climate, energy, poverty and social justice issues and is the Founding Director of the Energy Democracy Initiative in South Africa.
South African born and based, Ms Essop has significant experience in the climate movement. She has held various senior government positions in South Africa. She was a global climate policy and strategy leader for environmental NGO WWF International and served as the Head of Delegation for the organisation at the UNFCCC including at the Paris COP. During this period she also served on the Board of the Global Call for Climate Action (GCCA) and was an active participant in the work of CAN International.
