On this date back in 1991, a bomb dropped that destroyed hair bands and boy bands in one fell swoop. MTV played the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time, giving most Americans their first look at Nirvana. A little over a month later, the song is #1 on the Hot 100.

While it’s impossible to completely step out of Nirvana’s shadow when talking about Gen X music in the early ‘90s, we touched on other bands and albums that planted their flag as well.

Here’s some trivia. MAD Magazine began as a comic before getting cracked down on by the comics code. Rather than cave in, the publisher reclassified it as a magazine and the rest is history.

Happy birthday to football player "Mean" Joe Greene, born today back in 1946.

If you're not a sports fan, Greene's pop culture moment was starring in one of the most iconic TV ads for Coca-Cola known as "Hey Kid, Catch!" In it, an injured Greene offers a young fan his game jersey after drinking the kid's bottle of Coke. The commercial helped shift the public's perception of Greene as hostile and unapproachable, to a soft-hearted "nice guy".

A lot of chain restaurants and widely-known food products have real names and personalities behind them. Some of these businesses put their founders front and center — a certain international chicken chain comes to mind — while others stick with founders’ names even when the motivations for starting the business get lost as the times and brand stories change.

Today we discuss a couple of our favorites: Bob Evans and Nathan Handwerker (you know, the hot dog guy).
