𝗔𝗸𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺
At the courting stage, a young man or woman might ignore the red flags of their partner, seduced by grand promises and sweet words. Just like in a romantic relationship, Ghanaians were wooed with lies and unrealistic promises by the Akuffo Addo government, only to face a turbulent union after the vows were said. Just as a suitor might exaggerate their virtues to secure marriage, President Akuffo Addo promised Ghanaians the world with sweet campaign pledges such as "1 District, 1 Million Dollar" and "1 District, 1 Factory." The first warning sign came with the plagiarism of the inaugural speech, but just like a partner brushing off a glaring character flaw, we chose to believe in the facade.

The Akuffo Addo presidency is like a marriage full of lies and mismanagement. Just like a partner in a marital relationship who is untruthful and trades the integrity of the relationship for transient pleasure, can cause irreparable damage, so has this government been with its rampant corruption. Consider the $12 million Oslo consulate deal and the GHC18k entertainment allowances for the Sanitation Minister. These acts of corruption are similar to what a partner does when he or she engages in infidelity, damaging the trust that forms the basis of any successful marriage.

Profligate expenditures by the government are similar to a spouse who squanders the family's resources on frivolous luxuries. The $4.5 million spent on AFCON and the $17,000 per hour private jet hired by the president are stark examples. Just as a wife or husband wasting funds on frivolous items can land the family in financial ruin and marital discord, so these government expenditures are eroding the nation's wealth and public trust.

Specific scandals under this administration further underscore the analogy between governmental and marital issues:
The sole-sourced contract of $12.5 million for blood distribution drones is equivalent to a spouse who secretly withdraws family savings for some dubious scheme.
Presidential staff from 998 to 1, 614 is equivalent to a partner loading the household with uncalled-for expenses, strain, and resentment.
Missing GHC297,585 at Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly and blown $14 million at the Ministry of Tourism on capacity building are the equivalent of a spouse mismanaging funds leading to financial instability.
A very salient instance is the renovation of a two-bedroom residence at GHC1 million by the boss of the Ghana Maritime Authority now Board Chairman for GRA. This is equivalent to a spouse undertaking exorbitant home improvements without consulting his or her spouse, causing financial strain and mistrust. Similarly, suspension of an EOCO official for urging the President to prosecute his corrupt officials is tantamount to a partner dismissing all critical analysis of their behavior, thus creating a toxic environment in which accountability is absent.
The state of affairs that Ghana is in currently is but a testimonial to all our collective failures, which did not delve deeper than the appealing veneer that the Akuffo Addo government provided, much like a person getting into marriage without knowing the character of their spouse. Had we delved deeper into the credibility of these promises, perhaps we would have seen the telltale signs of future discontent and mismanagement.

In other words, the failings of the Akuffo Addo government bear an uncanny resemblance to the problems that afflict a marriage based on unrealistic expectations and warnings. Just as marital relationships can go bust because of lying, financial mismanagement, and lack of accountability, so can a government when it feeds people with pie-in-the-sky promises for short-term gains and personal enrichment rather than serving the people authentically. It is a good reminder of the importance of due diligence and the peril of being swayed by charming but empty promises.
