Juba gang suspects allegedly sent to Nasir frontline

A number of suspected gang members arrested in Juba during recent security crackdowns have allegedly been transferred to the Nasir frontline in Upper Nile State, according to unconfirmed reports shared on social media and by local residents.

The arrests followed a joint operation by police and SSPDF targeting criminal gangs in Sherikat, Gudele, Nyakuron, New Site and other areas identified as hotspots. Hundreds of young men were picked up during night raids over the past days.

While authorities have remained silent on the whereabouts of those detained, claims are spreading that some have been taken to Nasir, a flashpoint of ongoing fighting between government forces and armed groups. The area has seen heavy clashes in recent months, with many soldiers reportedly killed or wounded.

The alleged transfer has caused concern among families and rights groups, who are demanding answers. So far, there has been no official confirmation or denial from the police or army. The situation remains unclear, and calls are growing for the government to explain what is happening to those arrested.

Drama as a man exchanges bitter words with SSPDF at the Nimule border over orders to unlock his phone for checking.

A South Sudanese traveller stood firm to fIght back at Nimule, a border for South Sudan and Uganda, as he was threatened by South Sudan People Defense Forces (SSPDF) to unlock his phone or face deportation.

After migration clearance, travellers have been complaining that SSPDF at the Nimule border check petty pockets, shoes, and inside pant pockets intensively to search for anything of their intention. Even after peacefully checking, they also order travellers to unlock their phones and question photos or contents inside the phone.

They question any amount of foreign currency found with travellers from USD$100 above. After all this, security agents also ask for haga moyo (something for water).

It’s not clear why this is happening, although no specific public orders have been issued to security agents at the border to check phones and question petty cash from travellers.

Uganda and South Sudan have since then tightened their border security due to criminal activities and smuggling across the borders.

Jack Ma: If you’re still poor at 35, you deserve it!

You are poor because you have no ambition.

Jack Ma: Before I founded Alibaba (阿里巴巴), I invited 24 friends to my house to discuss the business opportunity. After discussing for a full two hours, they were still confused — I have to say that I may not have put myself across in a clear manner manner then. The verdict: 23 out of the 24 people in the room told me to drop the idea, for a multitude of reasons, such as: ‘you do not know anything about the internet, and more prominently, you do not have the start-up capital for this’ etc etc.

There was only one friend (who was working in a bank then) who told me, “If you want to do it, just try it. If things don’t work out the way you expected it to, you can always revert back to what you were doing before.” I pondered upon this for one night, and by the next morning, I decided I would do it anyway, even if all of the 24 people opposed the idea.

Jack Ma founding members

When I first started Alibaba, I was immediately met with strong opposition from family and friends. Looking back, I realised that the biggest driving force for me then was not my confidence in the Internet and the potential it held, but more of this: “No matter what one does, regardless of failure or success, the experience is a form of success in itself.” You have got to keep trying, and if it doesn’t work, you always can revert back to what you were doing before.

As with this quote by T.E. Lawrence – “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream in the dark recesses of the night awake in the day to find all was vanity. But the dreamers of day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, and make it possible.”

Jack Ma: People lose out in life because of these 4 reasons:

Being myopic to opportunity
Looking down on opportunities
Lacking understanding
Failing to act quickly enough
You are poor, because you have no ambition.

Ambition is living a life of great ideals; a magnificent goal in life that must be realised.

In this world, there are things that are deemed unfathomable, but there is nothing in this world that cannot be done. The depth of one’s ambition determines the potential of one’ future.

The Story of Juliet Wu Shihong – one of China’s first-generation professional managers, who gained success by working her way up the ranks from a cleaner, a nurse, a marketing executive, through self-education and learning on the job.

Juliet Wu Shihong

She had been the general manager for the world’s most famous multinational IT groups’ Chinese branches (Microsoft 1985-1998; IBM 1998-1999). She is also China’s first successful international corporate executive to join the executive team of a domestic private firm. Wu was seen as a symbol of the new generation of business executives that China has produced in its economic reform and opening-up.

When Wu started off in a big company working from the lowest ranks, her daily job was to pour tea and sweep floors. Once, because she forgot her staff pass, the company’s guard stopped her at the door and denied her entry. She explained to the guard that she was indeed one of the company’s employees, and that she had merely left the building for a short while to purchase office supplies.

Despite her pleas, the guard still did not allow to enter. As she stood at the gate, she watched as those of similar age to her, but smartly dressed in business attire walking through without having to show their passes.

She asked the guard, “Why are these people allowed through without producing a pass?” The guard dismissed her coldly nonetheless.

That was the turning point for Wu – she felt great shame, her self-esteem trampled on.

She looked at herself, dressed in shabby clothes and pushing a dirty push cart. Looking back at those dressed in smart attire, her heart felt a deep ache from the sudden realization of the sorrow and grief from being discriminated. From that moment, she vowed never to allow herself to be shamed like this again, and to become world-famous.

Since then, she used every opportunity to enrich herself. Every day, she was the first to arrive at work, and the last one to leave. She made every second count, spending her time learning the ropes. Her efforts soon paid off; she was made a sales representative, and quickly progressed to being the regional general manager of this multinational company in China. Wu did not possess strong academic qualifications, and was revered as the ‘Queen of Part-timers’. Subsequently, she assumed the position of GM of IBM China. This is the Wu Shihong, the heroine in China’s business circle.

Juliet Wu Shihong
If not for the incident, Wu Shihong would not have had the ambition to become rich, and her life would have taken a very different path then.

You are poor because you do not have the desire to become successful.
You are poor because you lack foresight.
You are poor because you cannot overcome your cowardice.
You are poor because you lack the courage and determination.
With ambition you can overcome all inferiority and maximise your potential!
With ambition you can persevere, continuously learn new things and strive for perfection.
With ambition you can defy all odds, and create miracles when others daren’t.
No matter how poor your family is, do not doubt your own abilities and lose sight of your ambition.

When your family deems you worthless, no one will pity you.
When your parents do not have money to pay the medical bills, no one will pity you.
When you are beaten by your competitors, no one will pity you.
When your loved ones abandon you, no one will pity you.
When you have not accomplished anything by the time you are 35, no one will pity you.
Go big, or go home. Otherwise, you’re wasting your youth.

Leadership Lessons from Jack Ma, Alibaba Founder

No matter how tough the chase is, you should always have the dream you saw on the first day. It’ll keep you motivated and rescue you (from any weak thoughts).” —Jack Ma

Ma Yun or popularly known as Jack Ma is the founder of Alibaba who rose from humble origins and became a role model for other entrepreneurs globally. He is a self-made billionaire. His evolution from an English teacher to an e-commerce empire builder can become an ideal inspiring case study in business schools. In this regard, we will discuss the lessons from his leadership.

Leadership Lessons from Jack Ma

“A leader should have higher grit and tenacity, and be able to endure what the employees can’t.” —Jack Ma

Jack Ma

Jack Ma was born in 1964. He was an English teacher and ventured into the e-commerce business. He admits, “English helps me a lot. It makes me understand the world better, helps me to meet the best CEOs and leaders in the world, and makes me understand the distance between China and the world.” He has entrepreneurial zeal and enthusiasm. He encountered several failures. He was rejected by Harvard and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). He wears his failures as badges of honor.

Time and timing favored him. When he entered the business, the internet was booming. English became an advantage for him to explore entrepreneurial opportunities outside China. He leveraged the English language effectively and the timing of the internet swiftly to start his e-commerce business. Wharton management professor David Hsu identified three aspects that distinguish Jack Ma. “First and foremost, his early recognition of the entrepreneur opportunity [in China], seizing it and building the vision and the company to execute in the face of a very complicated business environment.

Secondly, he has blazed a different career path than the tried-and-true model for many Chinese. He’s very forthright about his various failures. He has been quite persistent; seizing on various opportunities, he’s had to create his own fortunes. Third, retiring early and having the aspiration to do something else to keep his mind active and to go into a different domain than what he’s in, rather than just resting on the Alibaba legacy.” Here are some lessons to learn from his leadership.

Hire the right people rather than the best people. Jack Ma hires people smarter than him. He trains and grooms them as per the organizational culture and requirements. He emphasizes the importance of attitude and passion over theoretical skills in his employees.

Be part of the solution, not the problem. Avoid complaining. He says that successful people never complain. They are optimistic and partner with others. Use your precious time to explore entrepreneurial opportunities.

Failure is only a comma, not a full stop. Jack Ma remarked, “We made more mistakes than anybody can imagine. We made mistakes in raising capital. We made mistakes in management. We made mistakes in HR.” Failures are a learning ground.

Love the government but don’t marry them. Jack Ma did not get any support from the government. He raised capital from the market and other sources, especially from customers. He showed more returns to his shareholders and customers. Customers became happy and respected him. He loves to be respected than to be liked.

Take risks. Groom the next generation of leaders. Create opportunities for the people and the government. Empower others to be successful in the world. Make other people powerful. Be a giver, not a taker. Never give up.

Be persistent. Jack Ma is passionate about business. He is committed. He believes in teamwork. He adopts the philosophy of ‘customers first, employees second, and shareholders third’. He embraces change and emphases achieving success with integrity.

Jack Ma

Be ahead of times and technologies. Understand what people want and what people don’t want. Jack Ma learned English which most Chinese knew. He utilized the internet in the early stage. He is a good teacher and a great learner. He believes that more problems mean more opportunities. He implores to solve big problems to become big in life.

Improve the Mindset of Millennials

“Help young people. Help small guys. Because small guys will be big. Young people will have the seeds you bury in their minds, and when they grow up, they will change the world.” —Jack Ma

Hollywood inspired Jack Ma. He likes the film ‘Forrest Gump’. He practices Tai Chi and martial arts. He enjoys teaching, reading, writing, and serving. He implores his employees to work hard for others, not for themselves. He loves philanthropy. He opines that young people are depressed and often complain a lot. They must improve their mindset and view the world with optimism to explore opportunities. He wants to teach young people and intends to spend time with them.

Jack Ma

Never Give Up

“Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.” —Jack Ma

Jack Ma is intelligent and practical. He is cool and composed. He has tons of enthusiasm with a sense of humor. He is a good listener and a great storyteller. He shares anecdotes and examples to connect with others. He is diplomatic in his business dealings. He is a visionary leader and an effective decision-maker who always thinks several steps ahead of others. He is an ideal example that nothing is impossible in this world. To conclude, Jack Ma is a leader with humility and humanity. He will be remembered for this grit, determination, and philanthropy.

“I want to change history, do something important in my life, and influence individuals like we have with millions of small businesses on Alibaba. Then they love and respect you because you made their life important.” —Jack Ma
