Nigerian telecommunications operators have started implementing the long-awaited 50 per cent tariff hike following regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission as lawmakers moved to halt the rollout, citing economic hardship.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed the telecom regulator and the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to suspend the tariff increase, arguing that Nigerians cannot afford higher telecom costs amid rising inflation and the removal of fuel subsidies.

The tariff hike, which had been cleared by the NCC, was scheduled to take effect nationwide starting Monday. While MTN, the country’s largest telecommunications provider, had already started implementing the revised rates as of Tuesday, other key players—Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile—had yet to release their new pricing structure.

A senior MTN executive, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorisation to speak on the matter, confirmed the development.

Police Commands in Oyo, Ogun, and Kwara have commenced the enforcement of the third-party vehicle insurance policy directive amid mixed reactions.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports on Wednesday that the enforcement officially began across the three states on February 1 as directed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, who led and monitored the extent of compliance, told NAN that the enforcement was for the benefit of motorists.

According to the CP, Area Commanders in the state replicated the same in their respective jurisdictions and coverage areas.

Sonubi said the enforcement was part of the various ways of ensuring vehicles were roadworthy and had valid vehicle documents.

He stated that insurance companies were there to reduce the burden of motorists with third-party insurance policies whenever they got involved in accidents.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered and sealed a warehouse of six flats containing expired foreign drugs and supplements in the outskirts of Aba.

The News Agency of Nigeria NAN reports that the building is located in the serene village setting of Umummeje, Umuocheala in Osisioma LGA of Abia.

The South East Zonal Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr Martins Iluyomade confirmed the discovery after taking newsmen through the buildings packed full with expired products.

“This is a twin two story duplex with Boy’s Quarters filled with expired products to the brim and to a level I have never seen before since my days of working in NAFDAC.

“What we are seeing here are expired drugs that people have stocked here.

“I am seeing here that some of the expired products were purchased recently and in new cartons”, he said.
