Kebbi State Government flags off livestock vaccination campaign
Kebbi State government has flagged off livestock vaccination campaign in the state. The campaign which took place at Hutawa a Fulani settle in Birnin Kebbi local government was aimed at vaccinating livestock against diseases such as contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia, CBPP, Pest des Petit Ruminant, PPR, (Diarrhea of small ruminants), and Newcastle Disease, NCD.
The Secretary to the Kebbi State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida Yauri, while flagging off the exercise says about 10 million cattle, sheep and goats and other livestock are targeted for vaccination across the state this year.
Alhaji Yakubu Bala who was represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Kebbi State Ministry of Animal Health Husbandry and Fisheries, Dr. Ahmad Umar Ambursa explained that the exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Federal Department of Veterinary and Pest Control Services.
He announced that the Federal Government has already provided vaccines for the vaccination campaign to all states of the federation, but due to the high number of livestock in Kebbi State, its own share of the vaccines would only cover twenty-five percent of animals.
The Permanent Secretary stated that Kebbi State is blessed with about ten million livestock consisting of cattle, goats and sheep.
‘' Three million heads of cattle, three million, three hundred and fifty seven thousand heads of goat and three million, one hundred and fifteen thousand heads of sheep’’, he added.
He explained that kebbi state hoped to achieve between seventy and eighty percent vaccination coverage of all livestock this year in the state.
Dr. Ambursa added that the Kebbi State Ministry of Animal Health has evolved appropriate strategies to vaccinate all categories of livestock no matter their location and settlements of the nomads. He appealed to Fulani community to embrace the programme and cooperate with veterinary health workers to ensure that their animals are vaccinated to remain healthy.
The Permanent Secretary was emphatic that human health was connected with animal health, hence the need for the consumption of healthy meat.
The Ardo of Hutawa, Dikko Anguwar Gagga, Aliyu Hakimin Gubuji, the community leader of the Fulani settlement, thanked the Kebbi state Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, for placing premium on livestock development and improving animal health in the State.
He pledged the loyalty and support of the Fulani community to the success of the vaccination campaign in the state.
