I’m learning so much as Mothers In Construction gets connected globally. Hearing the stories of women around the world is inspiring.
I had the pleasure of visiting Singapore and attending the International Women’s Day Summit hosted by the Association of Women in Construction in Singapore . The theme was Building a Legacy: Women, the Catalyst for Change. The event was truly empowering, with the room overflowing with encouragement and support.
Women make up 30 percent of Singapore’s construction industry. Yes, I said THIRTY !
There were many phenomenal speakers , women who shared their stories and gave lessons on how to sustain a successful career in the industry. There were stories of perseverance , acknowledgment of being “firsts” in leadership , and a consistent tone of determination and grit.
Many of them were also mothers, sharing how their inherent ability to manage crises, along with the empathy and emotional intelligence gained from their experiences at home, translated into valuable skills in the workplace.
There were also male speakers present—strong allies who advocate for, support, and acknowledge the unique talents and contributions of women in the built environment. As allies, they are dedicated to fostering opportunities that enable everyone to thrive, regardless of gender.
Here are some of my favorite points from the summit :
* A powerful woman is one who stands up for herself and others.
* The industry must establish opportunity pipelines and remove barriers facing women.
* Women shouldn’t let others decide what success is, we should determine it for ourselves .
* Diversification, along with equitable and inclusive opportunities for all to thrive, is crucial to the industry.
* Succession planning is essential. Instead of holding others back, lift other women up alongside you.
* Creating a network of allies who support and sponsor women is vital.
* Self-care is a skill that must be practiced to enhance mental health and strengthen resilience in the face of adversity.
My favorite quote of the day was shared by Architect Susanna Swee :
“Here’s to strong women.
May we know them.
May we be them.
May we raise them.”
