I’m learning so much as Mothers In Construction gets connected globally. Hearing the stories of women around the world is inspiring.

I had the pleasure of visiting Singapore and attending the International Women’s Day Summit hosted by the Association of Women in Construction in Singapore . The theme was Building a Legacy: Women, the Catalyst for Change. The event was truly empowering, with the room overflowing with encouragement and support.

Women make up 30 percent of Singapore’s construction industry. Yes, I said THIRTY !

There were many phenomenal speakers , women who shared their stories and gave lessons on how to sustain a successful career in the industry. There were stories of perseverance , acknowledgment of being “firsts” in leadership , and a consistent tone of determination and grit.

Many of them were also mothers, sharing how their inherent ability to manage crises, along with the empathy and emotional intelligence gained from their experiences at home, translated into valuable skills in the workplace.

There were also male speakers present—strong allies who advocate for, support, and acknowledge the unique talents and contributions of women in the built environment. As allies, they are dedicated to fostering opportunities that enable everyone to thrive, regardless of gender.

Here are some of my favorite points from the summit :

* A powerful woman is one who stands  up for herself and others.
* The industry must establish opportunity pipelines and remove barriers facing women.
* Women shouldn’t let others decide what success is, we should determine it for ourselves .
* Diversification, along with equitable and inclusive opportunities for all to thrive, is crucial to the industry.
* Succession planning is essential. Instead of holding others back, lift other women up alongside you.
* Creating a network of allies who support and sponsor women is vital.
* Self-care is a skill that must be practiced to enhance mental health and strengthen resilience in the face of adversity.

My favorite quote of the day was shared by Architect Susanna Swee :

“Here’s to strong women.
May we know them.
May we be them.
May we raise them.”

This week, we honor and celebrate the incredible contributions of women in the construction industry. Architects, engineers, project managers, skilled tradeswomen, and more . We represent anyone who is trailblazing the field and literally building the path they see before them.

More now than ever, we must LEAN IN to support and celebrate one another each and every day .

Let’s continue to break down barriers and create more opportunities for us to thrive in our industry !

I’ve interviewed numerous mothers on the M.I.C podcast and pretty much all have expressed the desire to spend more time with their children. I myself longed for the day when I would be able to attend school trips, travel at will, and just be present. The opportunity became real when my family relocated overseas.

It was good at first, but once the honeymoon phase was over, this “new life” actually pushed me into a depression. Opportunities I thought existed were not as I imagined and although still providing meaningful contributions, the change in speed made me wonder if I could even continue to call myself a mother in construction. I felt so out of touch and alone.

Being a mom in this industry pushes you into survival mode. You fight so hard to maintain your position and deal with the life around you that you don’t know anything else. I had defined myself as a mother in construction so much so that when my career capacity changed, I didn’t know who I was anymore.

I’m happy to say that today I’m in a good place. It’s taken therapy and deep reflection to get here. I’ve accepted that in life there are seasons. Sometimes it’s go-hard hustle season; other times it’s be-still-and-grow season. My current season is necessary for whatever God has in store for me.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to put some respect on the name “Mommy”, be available to my children, and make wonderful memories as a family. The flexibility and new location also affords me the ability to make a global impact with Mothers In Construction. Learning about the different cultures, customs, and needs of women across the world gives me a special lens on advocacy that I wouldn’t have had if I hadn’t taken the risk of starting anew.

So here are my takeaways from 2024:

* Don’t paint yourself in a box. Words and phrases don’t define you.
* Every season in your life has a purpose, so embrace it.
* Being a mom involves sacrifices. It can be your body, your career, your time, your personal space, etc. Be intentional about remembering who you are as you shed whatever is necessary to thrive in the moment. Trust the process and continue to make it happen!

The Tradeswomen Building Bridges 2024 Philippines Delegation was nothing short of amazing. This experience was inspiring, eye-opening, and humbling.

The first week, the delegates conducted a plumbing and carpentry construction skills training to Filipina sisters in the community. During the second week, the delegates became students as the partner organization in the Philippines, AWWCI - Association of Women Workers in the Construction Industry, trained on community organizing and strategies to advocate for better working conditions along with increased opportunities for women in their country.

I’m so proud of and am in awe of the resiliency of the Filipina women I met. They face so much adversity as they press to be given opportunities and be seen. Their warm spirits and determination encouraged us all. Many were also moms, and we discussed the challenges of raising a family while also pursuing a career. They expressed issues with childcare, being considered liabilities by employers, and the multiple burdens experienced by mothers who carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. Their stores are all too familiar.

I also learned a lot from the other delegates who traveled from the US and Canada. Although from different areas and cultural backgrounds, we bonded over our passion to support women in our industry.

Thank you, Tradeswomen Building Bridges (TBB) for this opportunity. I recommend this experience to anyone. The ability to stand in solidarity with women in construction globally enhances your view on advocacy and empowers you to do more. For more information on the program, visit TBB’s website at: https://tradeswomenbuild.org

I’d also like to recognize the amazing women of AWWCI - Association of Women Workers in the Construction Industry. Please help support them as they push for inclusivity and to honor the contributions of women in society. You can follow them on Facebook.
