The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to withdraw the high-value Rs 2,000 notes from circulation, sparking comparisons with the 2016 demonetization.

However, there are key differences between the two moves. Unlike demonetization, the Rs 2,000 notes will remain legal tender even after the deposit deadline of September 30.

People can deposit or exchange these notes for lower denominations up to Rs 20,000 at a time.

Additionally, while demonetization aimed to tackle black money, the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes is part of the RBI's "Clean Note Policy" to remove low-velocity notes.

With a relatively small impact on currency circulation, the decision is not expected to cause a cash crunch, and citizens can exchange notes without restrictions, following KYC norms.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his intention to seek the support of all political parties to oppose and overturn the services ordinance introduced by the BJP-led central government.

Kejriwal described the upcoming fight in the Rajya Sabha as the "semi-final" for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
