The Momologist is a mom-led podcast that inspires, empowers and educates parents in their search for child-rearing wisdom. It’s a community where overthinking and overanalyzing is celebrated by like-minded parents who are committed to collecting as many resources, insights and strategies as possible. Motivated by a desire to “know it all”, a Momologist is an inquisitive parent who probes, analyzes

, and gathers information in pursuit of becoming better equipped to mold a life. It's an endeavor that can feel like an endless goose-chase filled with questions, succeeded by even more follow-up questions. To end the confusion and create a space for fellow Momologists to gather much-needed insights, I interview medical doctors, psychologists, scientists, midwives, doulas, coaches, consultants and more! Together, we dig through innovative theories, controversial claims and even current trending news, while also re-examining popular studies to challenge the status quo. We explore a variety of topics relating to feeding, education, self-esteem, health, social habits and more. Ultimately, the goal of this podcast is to give moms a source of mentorship and refuge, preparing them with the knowledge and resources to take a more confident and conscious approach to parenting. Here, every momologist can embrace her underrated skills of “over”-thinking within a supportive, curious tribe of fellow moms.

🤔Why won’t my child eat? Why are they being picky eaters? What will they actually eat?

You’re certainly not alone in having these questions. In a report by the Washington Post, it cites that picky eating ranges from 14-50% in preschool children, and from 7-27% in older children.

My conversation with Katie Kimball () gives us a fresh take on how we as parents or caregivers can avoid picky eating with great food habits.

In this conversation we cover:
⭐️The lost connection between where our ingredients are sourced from to cooking and eating
⭐️The benefits of children cooking and how it can enhance their critical thinking skills
⭐️Redefining playtime and dinner
⭐️Actionable steps that you can implement immediately to get your kids to enjoy cooking and actually eating their food.

Picky eating is an issue most parents are familiar with. Many of us have been there at some point or another. However, sometimes "picky eating is not about the food!" (Katie Kimball, two-time TEDx Speaker)

There are numerous factors to consider as to why your child may be a "picky eater" but sometimes the solution requires a little more detective work. Consider the 3 P's of Picky Eating suggested by blogger and founder of the Kids Cook Real Food ecourse, Katie Kimball ().

➡️Palette
➡️Pain
➡️Processing

These are all factors which could be playing into your child's picky eating tendencies. Stay tuned for a fresh take on this hot topic!

This approach would incorporate not only a child’s physical health but also their emotional, spiritual, and mental health.

In this episode, Dr. Madiha introduces:

🧬The science behind holistic parenting
🧠The factors which have the most profound effect on brain development,
✅The Four S’s which make up the foundation of holistic parenting

🧠During a child’s first 5 years of life, millions of brain connections are being formed, un-formed then re-formed. Depending on your child’s life experiences, this is an important time to form new pathways. Every interaction, every food, every touch, every sight, every smell, and every thought is a signal to the brain to reinforce or weaken a synapse.

✨This highlights the importance of how we parent and the critical impact we are able to make on the development of our children.

📻Stay tuned for one form of parenting you may want to consider in nurturing your child from the inside, out!

A word from ! Antiracism is multifaceted but I learned so much from Britt. For the parents trying to figure out where to start, begin with…
✅Yourself! Reparenting is a crucial step towards assessing and being conscious of your own experiences, how they shaped you, and what you’d like to pass on or NOT pass on to your children.
✅Another great place to start is at HOME. Reassess your surroundings. Pay attention to your children’s toys, books, movies, tv shows, etc. and examine what and whom they represent. Are your collections and selections diverse (more to come on this!)? Ensuring this can inspire natural conversations about race, equality, fairness and of course racism and bias!

Lastly, don’t be the parent who insists that “their children don’t see color.” Kids are not colorblind. They see color from the very beginning and are actually encouraged to sort colors in early age activities as well. We all see color and the truth is, we are all curious about one another! Let’s learn and be open to each other’s differences.

Being an antiracist co-conspirator is becoming an active participant working towards justice.

My conversation with Britt Paschal-Hawthorne highlighted the fact that when working towards being antiracist and raising antiracist children, it’s important for one’s actions to follow a lifestyle through becoming an ally and ultimately a co-conspirator. It can mean putting something on the line or yourself in uncomfortable situations.

This sneak peek from my conversation with reminds us of the importance of failing beautifully and learning alongside our children.

When engaging in antiracism, give yourself the grace in understanding that you’re in the middle of a process just as your children typically are. Taking baby steps goes a long way for us adults as well!👶

If you have a brain, you have bias! Biases are shortcuts our brains take to make fast decisions. There are various forms of bias such as affinity, confirmation, in-group, unconscious and implicit bias. However, how do we encourage an awareness in ourselves and within our children of how these biases may negatively affect our connection with others?

In our conversation with Britt Paschal-Hawthorne, antibias/antiracist facilitator, we learn that the goal is never to become unbiased but to understand the ways in which your brain has made fast decisions or shortcuts which not only hold you back but others from their fullest potential.

Car accidents are a leading cause of death for children in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We cannot stress enough the importance of car safety for kids, and that includes car seats.

So here's a question for you: How long should you keep your child rear-facing in a car seat?

The answer? As long as possible. For years, accepted best practice for rear-facing car seats has been until age 2, but those recommendations have since been updated.

To give you a more concrete answer, According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), "Keep your child rear-facing as long as possible. It’s the best way to keep him or her safe. Your child should
remain in a rear-facing car seat until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, your child is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness and tether."

According to the CDC, the use of a car seat reduces the risk of injury sustained in a crash by 71% to 82% for children when compared to seat belt use alone.

As a parent, you are no stranger to product shortages, whether it be in your own house or the grocery store that seems to perpetually be out of that ONE thing. If you have a baby in the house, you are probably well-aware of the current shortages of infant formula in certain stores.

So what do you do if you can't find baby formula in stock?

Here are some expert tips:

(Keep in mind that these tips are strictly for URGENT situations; any concerns about your baby's nutrition should be discussed with your pediatrician.)

🔹 Talk with your pediatrician and ask if they are able to get you a can from the local formula representatives or one of the charities that has some. Your local WIC office may also be able to help.
🔹 Check smaller stores and drug stores, which may not be out of supply when the bigger stores are.
🔹 If you can afford it, buy formula online until store shortages ease. Purchase from well-recognized distributors and pharmacies rather than individually sold or auction sites.
🔹 If absolutely no formula can be found, consider borrowing a can from a friend.
🔹 Never water down formula! Always follow label instructions or those given to you by your pediatrician. Watering down formula is dangerous. It can cause nutritional imbalances in your baby and lead to serious health problems.
🔹 The AAP strongly advises against homemade formula. Although recipes for homemade formulas circulating on the internet may seem healthy or less expensive, they are not always safe and may not meet your baby's nutritional needs.

If you have further questions, consult with your pediatrician.

26/04/2022

Even in pre-COVID times, spring was the season of sniffles and sneezes. Coughs, sore throats, and runny noses usually come as no surprise to parents, but sometimes, it can be difficult to tell the difference between simple allergies, strep throat, or something more serious.

It's important to know the difference in causes and symptoms between these ailments because they're all treated differently.

👉 Strep throat
Strep is caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacterium, with symptoms including a very sore throat, fever exceeding 102 degrees Fahrenheit, and swollen glands. It's very common among school-age children and is treated with antibiotics.

🛑 It's important to note that a cough, runny nose, hoarseness, and pinkeye are NOT symptoms of strep throat. These symptoms are more indicative of a virus and therefore cannot be treated with antibiotics.

👉 Viral infection
These are more common among young children, including infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Viral infections typically run their course in 7-10 days and often present cold-like symptoms in addition to a sore throat.

Because it can be so difficult to diagnose, it's important to call your pediatrician if a sore throat persists.

For more information about strep throat and other throat ailments, visit HealthyChildren.org. Additional resources can also be found through the American Academy of Pediatrics.
