Please be advised that Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) have been confirmed on Cayuga Lake. People, pets, and livestock should avoid water that contains suspected and confirmed HABs as HABs can cause negative health effects in people and animals.

Since HABs are quite prevalent on local bodies of water during warmer weather, Cayuga County Health Department will not be issuing a press release on each future occasion that HABs are present on local water bodies.

Please refer to the full press release for additional information.

OLD ERIE CANAL HERITAGE PARK, PORT BYRON (posted July 15, 2025)

Yesterday, Jerry, the pups and I finally visited the Old Erie Canal Heritage Park in Port Byron. We all had a great time!

The volunteers were very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The park is very dog friendly! They had water bowls set out for the dogs in the main building and in the Erie House. And of course they had dog treats ☺

There is no admission fee, but donations are welcome.

We took limited pictures because we hope you go visit the park yourself and experience a piece of local history.

Thank you to the volunteers that were working yesterday for making the experience so enjoyable! We (and the pups) look forward to visiting the park again soon.

Slow down and move over if it is safe to do so.

Our crews are out across New York, working hard to keep our roads safe and reliable. When you see a work zone, slow down, move over if possible, and stay alert.
Let’s help to make sure everyone gets home safely!

The Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) is a species of butterfly commonly seen in New York around rich-soil meadows and woodland edges. At first glance the Great Spangled Fritillary (GSF) is identifiable by its orange and black dorsal sided wings and cinnamon colored ventral sided wings adorned with silver spots.

Butterflies are unique among insects because their large wings are completely covered in microscopic scales. The order that butterflies and moths belong to is called Lepidoptera which translates to "scale wing!" These scales work together to create a mosaic that makes up the color and pattern of butterfly wings. The name Fritillary has Latin roots and refers to the checkered pattern seen on either side of the butterfly's wings.

If you are lucky enough to have a butterfly land on you, you might get a look at their long unique mouth part called a proboscis. This straw-like appendage is kept coiled up when not in use and is elongated into a straight tube to suck up nectar and other liquid food sources. Great Spangled Fritillary adults eat the nectar of common milkw**d, Joe Pye w**d, verbena, and red clover. The female Great Spangled Fritillary will only lay her eggs on violets because that is the only food source a GSF caterpillar will eat.
