Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia in the late afternoon and evening hours - bringing a strong wind and heavy rain threat to the northern I-81 corridor.

A strong line of storms has materialized in Pennsylvania and Maryland and is putting its sights on the northern part of the Valley. From Harrisonburg to Wi******er, VA - this will be something to keep an eye on as the evening approaches!

An absolutely incredible look at CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE ERIN with sustained winds of 160mph around the eyewall, northeast of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

This storm is likely to remain mostly a fish storm - bringing with it rain and significant riptide and possibly storm surge to the Carolina and Virginia coasts.

We are likely to miss what would be a catastrophic storm if this were to make landfall. Wind shear and lower water temperatures will force Erin to lose strength over the next couple of days, but we are witnessing the heights of what the atmosphere of planet earth is capable of. Similar to Hurricane Milton last year, this storm has undergone “EXTREME RAPID INTENSIFICATION” - going from a Tropical Storm to CAT 5 strength in just 24 hours.

ATLEAST 60mph winds in CROSS KEYS, VA as a significant downburst moved through the area - not severe warned but probably should be. Absolutely intense with 1in + per hour rainfall rates accompanying this cell!

Storms are firing west of I-81 in Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties in Virginia, capable of some very heavy rainfall, gusty winds and so far documented FREQUENT lightning. An affiliate of mine has seen a broadly rotating wall cloud - no risk of a tornado but a sign of an intensifying storm. Severe potential is low but not zero today so we should pay attention and be indoors as Thunder roars. My biggest concern is the forward motion of these storms, they are moving quite slow posing a risk of flash flooding into the evening hours. Be safe y’all!

Strong to severe thunderstorms and HEAVY (1-2in) of rain will be possible today in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and the northern I-81 corridor. People from Staunton, VA through the state of VERMONT should be weather aware today as a system moves through capable of producing thunderstorms with winds of 60mph+ and heavy rain that may move slowly through your area today between 1-8pm.

My bigger worry lies in the flash flood risk but the strong thunderstorms that do develop will have significant amounts of lightning - likely between Lexington, VA and Tacoma Park, MD. On days like this, I do not rule out the random brief spin up tornado. Shear is low, but sometimes our area can surprise us.

SLIGHT RISK (2/5) aka SCATTERED STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS possible within the Shenandoah Valley to NOVA today, July 31, 2025.

As an advancing front progresses south, we have a chance for severe weather and very heavy rainfall - which primarily is my concern today as heavy rain yesterday will allow flash flooding with little to no effort by todays storms.

If you follow radar, or simply hear thunder in the Shenandoah Valley in VA today - know you could be in for a doozy. It will not take much for low lying areas (especially in towns like Hinton, Fulks Run and Broadway) to flood. These areas were hit hard yesterday and only a quarter of rainfall in an hour will allow flooding to overtake low lying areas.

I am concerned about todays setup. 1 or 2 significant storms could develop with strong winds and maybe even your occasional supercell, with strong winds as your primary risk, meaning trees in saturated areas will uproot easier.

Stay tuned to your local trusted weather sources, NOAA radio and warning systems as severe weather and flooding will be possible until 10pm tonight - specifically been 3-10pm tonight.
