Concerning rotation on the previously severe warned storm moving northeast near Bristow, VA. These setups today can produce brief spin ups - especially as storms ride out boundaries nearby. Stay weather aware if you’re in the path of this storm!

There is a chance of severe weather today stretching across the area - specifically the Blue Ridge and east of, but I would not rule out a severe storm or two in the Shenandoah Valley and the I-81 corridor.

The MARGINAL RISK (1/5) is between the Blue Ridge and Piedmont but when the cold front moves into this unstable environment east of West Virginia, anything is possible.

Timing will range between 2-6pm here in Virginia, heavy rain, gusty winds and hail will be the primary risks with a low but non zero tornado risk.

A potent squall line is moving ENE through the Blue Ridge of North Carolina and Virginia right now - just east of I-81, and is producing heavy rain, severe winds of 60+mph and a few points of rotation that could create some problems ahead of the cold front.

Keeping a close eye on all of this, be in your safe place if you are in these severe thunderstorm warnings or in front of the storm system.

Strong to severe thunderstorms, including heavy rain and potentially large hail and the occasional isolated supercell - will be possible in the dark shaded areas between 2-6pm this afternoon and early evening.

A front will advance east bringing with it heavy rain late this morning, and clearing out before a broken squall line pushes east with stronger thunderstorm capability.

Thunderstorms will have some instability and wind shear to work with, allowing thunderstorm development to advance to near severe or severe potential. A brief, isolated pre frontal supercell between Pennsylvania through North Carolina cannot be ruled out, which would bring stronger wind gusts, larger hail and a low but not zero risk for a weak tornado.

I never rule out tornadoes in setups like this, or flash flooding as your brief strong to severe thunderstorm can put down serious rainfall in short amounts of time.

Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia in the late afternoon and evening hours - bringing a strong wind and heavy rain threat to the northern I-81 corridor.

A strong line of storms has materialized in Pennsylvania and Maryland and is putting its sights on the northern part of the Valley. From Harrisonburg to Wi******er, VA - this will be something to keep an eye on as the evening approaches!

An absolutely incredible look at CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE ERIN with sustained winds of 160mph around the eyewall, northeast of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

This storm is likely to remain mostly a fish storm - bringing with it rain and significant riptide and possibly storm surge to the Carolina and Virginia coasts.

We are likely to miss what would be a catastrophic storm if this were to make landfall. Wind shear and lower water temperatures will force Erin to lose strength over the next couple of days, but we are witnessing the heights of what the atmosphere of planet earth is capable of. Similar to Hurricane Milton last year, this storm has undergone “EXTREME RAPID INTENSIFICATION” - going from a Tropical Storm to CAT 5 strength in just 24 hours.
