Another chance for strong to severe thunderstorms exists across the Mid Atlantic, including the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia on Thursday, June 18.

Very hot and humid with strong upper dynamics will be in play tomorrow - the question is cloud cover and surface heating limiting instability.
Remember, less clouds early = better chance for severe storms later.

Timing will be between 1-8pm and damaging winds, torrential rain and frequent lightning being your main risks. Multiple rounds of thunderstorms will be possible.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT IS INCREASING

Storms are going severe across the area, and are going to attempt to position ourselves in front of the severe/previously severe warned storms in Augusta County, VA.

Take all warnings seriously and do NOT have outdoor activities planned heading into the evening hours today.

Storms could fire and rapidly strengthen into dangerous thunderstorms.

FRIDAY SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK POSSIBLE

Multiple clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible across the Mid Atlantic and Northeast today, as an approaching cold front is moving into a very unstable and seasonably warm environment.

CAPE sitting above 2000j/kg along with shear profiles that, if all ingredients come together to create storms, will allow storms to form rapidly and produce downbursts that could exceed 60mph.

There are a few things in the way of today reaching its potential, but if things play out, do not be caught out in these storms.

My official opinion, I do think numerous storms will produce torrential rainfall, strong to severe winds and frequent lightning - and will be scattered in nature. These will be a problem between 4-7pm. I am especially concerned about the squall line that will move into the I-81 corridor around 6-7pm.

Plan accordingly, and have all loose objects inside ahead of today’s approaching severe weather. Loose objects can become lofted, and become debris in severe weather scenarios.

So were right under the minuscule wall cloud at the farthest south edge of the severe warned squall line in Broadway, VA when this little vortex spun up.

This thing spun up right in front of us and looked like it had easily 60mph winds in it, hit the car which shook us almost into the other lane, and threw dirt and rocks into my teeth.

Not tornadic but one of the weirdest things of my storm chasing career… (don’t mind me screaming WHAT IS THAT in the very beginning)

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE ACROSS THE MID ATLANTIC THURSDAY AND FRIDAY

The first of a couple of days of severe weather across the Appalachians and the Mid Atlantic begins Thursday, June 11

THURSDAY: A hot, unstable air mass will be in place tomorrow across the Mid Atlantic and I81/I95 corridors, stretching from Virginia to New York - where thunderstorms are expected to develop and become increasingly scattered throughout the day.

Main risks on Thursday will be hail, damaging winds in excess of 50mph and an isolated supercell. Timing looks to be between 1-10pm.

FRIDAY: On Friday, severe thunderstorms will be possible across much of the same area as Thursday, with the possibility of a “ridge-rider” setup becoming increasingly likely.

This is due to a heat dome being place to our south - where the Mid Atlantic states are positioned in the line of fire for quick, rapidly strengthening thunderstorms throughout the afternoon and evening hours.

Heavy rain, strong winds in excess of 60mph, and large hail appear to be the main risks.

Thunderstorms could initiate and be severe within 20-30 minutes, and could be on top of you fast as they may travel up to 50+mph.
