How many of you got into making sourdough bread during lockdown?

Did you know that making sourdough bread is similar to making compost?

It requires time, care, and the right microbes.

At first glance, a pile of food waste might appear to be just that – waste.

However, something magical occurs with the right balance of ingredients, moisture, air, and a bit of patience.

Just as flour and water become a bubbling sourdough starter, food ‘waste’ and wood chips transform into compost full of microorganisms that nourish our soil, cultivate our food, and support healthy ecosystems.

Much like baking bread, composting is part science, part art, and inherently human.

It connects us to the natural cycles that modern life often conceals.

In an era of climate crisis, food insecurity, and soil degradation, composting is not just a waste solution – it’s a climate solution.

Let’s treat our food scraps with the same respect we extend to our sourdough starters.

Because beneath every compost heap is the silent work of microbes, fungi, and worms… building the foundation for our future.

A growing movement of local initiatives to tackle the city’s food waste and turn it into nutrient-rich compost was reported by Bristol Good Food 2030 🥔🍌🥦

“In Bristol, we generate around 48,000 tonnes of food waste every year, most of which is processed in anaerobic digesters or energy-from-waste plants. Such technology means that food waste is kept out of landfill, but its potential to become nutrient-dense soil is lost”. Hannah Shepherd.

The benefits of composting at home include less waste, permaculture principles of using what’s on site, saving money, high quality soil. The benefits of composting increase at a greater scale when composting for the community. Imagine a circular food system 🔄 with local composting, working with nature and giving back to the land with composted nutrient-rich soil. The way nature intended and has existed for millions of years!

Local initiatives leading the way include Generation Soil CIC Bristol Living Soil Heart of BS13’s ‘Closed Loop Club’ who also offer education and training about the benefits of composting and how we can all get involved.

“In Bristol, we’re lucky to have separate waste food collection by the council, meaning the majority of our waste food stays out of landfill sites. But rather than using it to create living soil and cycle it back into the growing cycle, this food waste is processed.” Bristol Living Soil.

“The food system is a mess, but we can fix it. Urbanisation and intensive farming have damaged the foundation of life on Earth - soil. This is negatively impacting human health, the quantity of nutrients in our food, and nature.” Generation Soil.
