About the Mentor:

Ahmad Abubakar Gumel is a passionate Nigerian youth activist with over six years of experience in civic engagement, democracy, and governance. He is the founder of Turnup Jigawa, a youth-led civic and democratic movement empowering young leaders to collaborate with lawmakers in solving societal challenges.

A 2024 Mandela Washington Fellow, Ahmad is also a fellow of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative, Yiaga Africa’s COI, and LEAP Africa’s Nigeria Youth Futures Fund. Through his work, he has impacted over 10,000 young Nigerians via civic programs and secured multiple grants to advance youth participation.

With a background in English Education (BUK) and currently pursuing a Master’s in International Affairs and Diplomacy (ABU), Ahmad is committed to tackling youth unemployment, political apathy, and exclusion, while championing young people as key drivers of Africa’s transformation by 2030.

Yesterday the Mentminds Team led an outreach for the Almajiri Empowerment Initiative, engaging with facilitators, Malams, and the Almajiris themselves.

At the Late Imam Musa Tsangaya School, Kawo Kaduna, Malam Jafar, the head of the school, expressed heartfelt gratitude as 10 Almajiris from their school benefited from our support. He commended the effort and encouraged us to continue building on this initiative.

We deeply appreciate our ever-supportive Anty, Hajiya Fatima Mamman Daura whose unwavering support has made this outreach possible. Her generosity and commitment have empowered us to touch more lives and expand our impact.

Muhammad Usman is a child rights advocate and young changemaker from Kano, Nigeria. He protects vulnerable and street-involved children through education, skills training, and policy advocacy. He is the first youth from Northern Nigeria elected as an Ashoka Young Changemaker, a KidsRights Changemaker, and winner of the 2024 Youth Spotlight Award. He founded the Young Developer Foundation, is an alumnus of the Leaders of Tomorrow Digital Exchange Program, a Future Diplomat MUN ambassador, and also works as a virtual freelance assistant.

Abubakar Sadiq Mu’azu is the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Advocacy, Transparency, and Accountability Initiative (CATAI), with over 10 years of experience in the humanitarian and development sector. A Global Education Champion under the Malala Fund, he is passionate about girl child education, community empowerment, and accountability. He has led impactful projects with organizations like USAID, UNICEF, IOM, and Oxfam, focusing on education, governance, peacebuilding, and youth development. Abubakar holds degrees in Geography and Disaster Risk Management from the University of Maiduguri and continues to drive grassroots change across Northeast Nigeria.

Alhamdulillah!
Today, our team at Mentminds with founder Shamsuddeen Jibril Bagaldi successfully placed Almajiri children into dedicated learning clusters, where they will learn valuable local skills such as carpentry and aluminium works.

Over the next few months, they will undergo hands-on training to master these skills, enabling them to earn a living with dignity. This is part of our mission at Mentminds to eradicate street begging by creating pathways to education, skill acquisition, and self-reliance.

The joy and excitement on their faces today is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
