Benue 10th Assembly: A new approach to serving the people -Deputy Speaker

By Bridget Tikyaa

It has been two eventful years since the Benue State House of Assembly was inaugurated on June 5, 2023. Two years that has set it apart from previous assemblies in terms of providing purposeful services to the people of the state.

In the words of Hon Mrs Lami Danladi Lawrence, the Deputy Speaker, who is representing Ado Constituency, the Assembly has been exceptional in the discharge of its responsibilities.

"I want to assure you that the 10th Assembly is exceptional from every other Assembly," she said, attributing the feat to the invaluable support of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, whom she described as a "messiah".

I will thank God Almighty for sending a Messiah to our dear state. His excellency has been a source of smile as he has done so much for the 10th Assembly. If you compare this 10th Assembly with the 9th assembly the difference is much. During the 9th assembly, the past administration did not give vehicles to the members of the assembly, but in the 10th Assembly today, under the leadership of Rev, Hyacinth Alia, he has given all the members of the 10th Assembly Prado jeep, a jeep that is worth nothing less than a hundred million Naira.

"Also, when you talk about the benefit that the assembly is getting today it will amaze you because it is about hundred percent of what we used to get before. If you come to the assembly complex today, you will see that his excellency has done so much in renovating the assembly complex and the offices.

"Although the project is still ongoing, as of last three weeks we got information from a reliable source that the complete funds for the project has been released to the contractor, so if the contractor has not completed the work it's not the fault of His Excellency because the funds have already been released to the contractor.

"His Excellency has done so much for the 10th Assembly and we are happy working with him. We are happy not just because of what he is doing for us in the assembly, but what he is doing for the people of Benue state. We are looking at a lot of development today in our dear state. We can now drive smoothly on the state roads all because of our governor who has the feeling of his people at heart.

"We thank him for all he is doing for us, our pensioners, retirees and civil servants are happy, unlike the past administration that have owed them for almost four years without payment and that led to a lot of people losing their lives because they can't afford money for medication. Today the story is totally different, God has sent the reverend gentleman to come and redeem the people of Benue state. I think the people of Beune state should thank God for the kind of Governor they have. We pray that this victory he have gotten will multiply by 2027."

It is pertinent to observe that the state Assembly has done very well in the discharge of its legislative duty. So far, it has passed the highest legislations and motions ever in the history of the state. This is in spite of the suspension of some lawmakers, which has been lifted.

On her part, the Deputy Speaker elated for being part of the solution to the decades of years old crisis between the people of Agila and neighboring villages and another from neighboring Ebonyi state

"For years, this problem has been on, a lot of people have tried, a lot of legislators, appointed members have come and tried but they could not really do anything much about it, but during our tenure, God used us to set up a committee and we started following it up. I wrote Honourable Eze Nwachukwu, the member of the House of Representatives representing the community in Ebonyi . We are having this crisis for many years. We went to the office and we discussed and he said he is going to see how he can meet with a respected father and chief, Chief Mike Okigbe Onoja to see how we can set up a committee to bring about peace between the Agila and Mngbo people.

"It started like a joke and then the committee was set up. The first meeting was in Otukpo, the second meeting was in Ebonyi state in their Government House, the third meeting was in Agila community and the fourth one was in Umbo. It is a miracle because nobody will ever believe that a war that have taken place for over a hundred and fifty years will just be resolved. We continued to push with the house of reps members with the Ugbo people, we met and discussed, Chief Okigbe Onoja instructed us on what to do and how to go about it.

"For the first time in the history of Ugbo and Agila, today both communities can marry each other. They are living peacefully without any crisis, that have really helped the economy of both the Agila and Umbo people. They can now buy and sell from each other without conflict. That is one of my achievements in the office."

The lawmaker has also stamped her presence in the community secondary school in Apa Council ward in Ado Local Government by providing water, generator chairs and rehabilitating their toilets and some classrooms .

"Outside the community school in Apa, two other projects are ongoing in Agila community school. They have finished building it, started it from scratch, we have finished building and roofing now. I think from now till Saturday they will be done with the roofing of the school. I also have the intention of building two or three toilets for them after we complete the roofing and the painting. There will be chairs, fans, black boards etc.

"We have done a lot of renovations of boreholes and some that have been abandoned for years. I have renovated about 25 boreholes and I'm still renovating more. The mosque at Utonkon the people cried to me that they needed help in building a mosque. To the glory of God I have completed the mosque with a solar of about 8 panels. There's light in the mosque, we did it in a very standard way. There's a promise to put a borehole for them, by the grace of God that project will kick start by August," the Deputy Speaker said.

One key area of intervention is in the area of empowerment to enable people earn decent living. This has been done by the lawmakers including the Deputy Speaker who said she had provided start up funds to women for small scale businesses, foodstuffs to those in need, and scholarship to the girl child.

"I have adopted a lot of girl children, I have given a lot of scholarships to the girl child and I have more than four girls in the university that started with me from their primary to secondary school. Some of the girls have graduated already and I'm still doing more. I have some who have been given admission to study in the medical line and law, some are in secondary school, primary school and some I gave them scholarship from primary down to secondary school, these are some of the things I have done so far.

"When it comes to empowerment, I have empowered my people with a lot of job opportunities, like the SUBEB jobs that the governor made available, I was given about 45 slots, I didn't take those slots outside Benue, it was given to the Ador people, they benefited from it and their appointment letter have been given to them. I have empowered about 5 policemen who have gotten jobs.

This army recruitment that just concluded recently, I helped about fourteen youths. When it comes to civil defence and custom I have help our youths in getting jobs. I have just given 3 slots to our youth to get job at the College of Education in Kiyana. I keep pushing and I don't relent, sometimes I go to the federal offices in Abuja to know what is happening and what our people can benefit from the government, then bring it back home and help our people."

The Deputy Speaker's intervention did not end there. She had deployed 16 medical doctors and 28 nurses, and spent over N160 million to provide medical services, including surgery to indigent patients with a lot of trucks.

"The programme took place in Apa Agila, we did two days in Apa Agila and we did two in Akpobi Obioli ward. We went back to Apa Agila again, they attended to almost 800 patients. We also have doctors that gave out eye glasses and treated people who had problems with their eyes. We gave about 250 eye glasses to people and we had malaria drugs and cough syrup for children. There were BP check. They treated nothing less than a thousand plus people. I am sure of the number of people that we operated on, they were more than 20.

"That medical outreach was one of the biggest outreach I have done in Ador local government, people even came from Ebonyi state to benefit. People from the ten council ward of Ado came and benefited. I am planning on doing another for the people of Utonko because they did not benefit from the programme."

In all, the Deputy Speaker believes that the 10th Benue Assembly is exceptional. "I have never seen an assembly like that before, here we live like one. We have this union before we even won the election, we even have a platform where we always meet ourselves and discuss. That platform has really helped us. We are living together and we work together as a team, I don't think there will be anything that will make us fight each other.

"We handle things in a mature way before going to the executive chamber. One thing I will assure you is that I don't see any sign of anybody planning anything like an impeachment to the Governor. But even, it is possible that some bad eggs may do that, even if there is any such plan, they will not succeed, because people like us that are there will never give such support and if we don't support it, there is no way it will happen.

"The Governor is treating us well to the best of my knowledge. There may be someone complaining, because we can't get everything a hundred percent. From the little I know, the governor is trying his best for the Assembly. I am happy with the governor and we all support him, nobody have complaints about him, though there are some complaints and they are normal because we can't get it hundred percent."She admitted.

Benue Assembly Suspends Five Lawmakers Over Otukpo LG Report

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended five of its members for allegedly tampering with a report on the activities of the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Hon. Maxwell Ogiri.

The lawmakers Hon. Terna Shimawua, Hon. Mathew Damkor, Hon. Cephas Dyako, Hon. Moses Egbodo, and Hon. Isaac Echekliye were suspended for three legislative sittings.

Citizen Television Newsroom gathered that all five are members of the House Standing Committee on Local Government, Security, and Chieftaincy Affairs.

According to the House, the affected members altered the original findings of their investigation into allegations of misappropriation of funds and abuse of office by the Otukpo LG Chairman.

The committee, led by Hon. Shimawua, was earlier mandated by the Assembly to probe complaints against Hon. Ogiri. However, during the presentation of their report, the committee reportedly deviated from the actual findings, drawing the ire of the lawmakers.

In response, the Assembly rejected the report and constituted a five-member ad-hoc committee, chaired by Hon. Ipusu, to carry out a fresh investigation and reveal the truth.

The Assembly further accused the committee of attempting to shield Hon. Ogiri from accountability, including concealing details about the alleged illegal closure of the Otukpo Legislative Chamber.

The suspension, announced during Tuesday’s plenary, was part of the House’s resolution to maintain integrity and transparency in legislative oversight.

Terver Zamber, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, confirmed the development in a statement issued shortly after the sitting.

NASARAWA GOVERNOR, ABDULLAHI SULE PRESSURIZED ME TO ESTABLISH ILLEGAL MILITIA GROUP,’ MIYETTI ALLAH LEADER ALLEGES

By News Editor April 7, 2024

The President of Miyetti Allah Kautal H**e, Bello Bodejo, has alleged that the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, is behind the establishment of the ethnic militia group, Kungiya Zaman Lafiya.

Bodejo, who is facing terrorism charges, accused the governor of pressurising him to form the militia group.

The Miyetti Allah leader was arrested by operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency on January 23, 2024, at the group’s office in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State for allegedly unveiling a militia group and has been in custody since then.

He was arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja on three counts of terrorism on March 22, 2024.

Bodejo was specifically accused of establishing the Kungiya Zaman Lafiya ethnic militia in Nasarawa State without authorisation.

The offence is punishable under Section 29 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

However, in his confessional statement, Bodejo alleged that the Nasarawa State governor is behind the formation of the militia group.

He stated that he received a call from the governor earlier in the year expressing his desire to establish a vigilante group different from those of his counterparts.

Bodejo said, “I was arrested because of the vigilantes I paraded in Nasarawa State. Sometime in early January 2024, Governor Sule called me and said that he wanted me to see him concerning a Fulani group called Kungiya Zaman Lafiya, which I told him I didn’t know about. The governor said what he called me for was because all the governors had agreed to form vigilante groups in their states like Katsina State had done, but he did not want to organise his like other state governors.

“He said he wanted to use all those who participated in the political rally before the election. And he intended to link them with the Army and they would work for him as vigilantes. The governor asked if I could work with Akajo, the leader of the group and I told him that I couldn’t come down to work with Akajo because I am from the national level. Later, I called Akajo to meet me and we discussed how to operate the Kungiya Zaman Lafiya in the state. I told the Emir of Lafia that people complained about the group and I didn’t like them.

“However, I asked Akajo about the number of his men. He said there were about 700 men. I demanded for their ID cards which he showed me; the ID cards were authorised and signed by the CSO to the Nasarawa State governor. About two weeks later, the governor called me to come with Akajo.”

Bodejo stated that he met with Akajo and Sule at the Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

He said despite informing the governor of the negative narratives about Akajo’s group, he insisted that he (Bodejo) worked with him.

Bodejo said, “So, I left Bauchi and sent for Akajo to meet me at the Governor’s Lodge. When I got to the lodge, I met Akajo with the governor. The governor enquired what was happening between me and Akajo. I told him that Akajo and his group were spoiling the good name of the governor by causing crises, stealing cattle, and killing people.

“They went and cleared the Toto LGA problem. When they got there, they gathered Fulani and harassed them. The Fulani ran away, leaving the cattle. Akajo and his group gathered the cattle and sold them. The governor insisted that I should work with him.”

The Miyetti Allah leader claimed that other people from the Nasarawa, Obi, and Kyana local government areas of the state who were meant to join Akajo’s group pulled out because Akajo failed to give them their share of the fund released by the governor.

He said, “I told the governor that I requested for the group’s list from Akajo so that I could join it with my people to make up the 2,000 and that he had not given me. The governor said we should have a meeting in Lafia. During the meeting, I told the Ardos what the governor wanted to do with the Kuniya Zaman Lafiya and they bought the idea. During the meeting, one member of the Kunya Zaman Lafiya complained that they were not benefiting from anything. I immediately called the governor to inform him.

“The governor affirmed that all funds were released to Akajo for the group, so it was Akajo who failed to settle them. On this revelation, the people were angered and the people from Nasarawa, Obi, and Kyana LGAs said they could not join Akajo’s group. The governor instructed that I should make do with the existing 700 members of the Akajo group and if possible I should make it up to 1,000.”

Bodejo added that after the meeting, he met with one of his friends, Captain Ahmed Chiroma retd., who advised him to make the establishment of the group legal.

Bodejo said the governor then instructed him to meet with the Secretary to the State Government to discuss the cost of procuring kits for 1,000 members of the group. But the Miyetti Allah leader said Chiroma advised him to be careful as the establishment of the group was illegal.

Bodejo stated that after registering the group, he got the uniforms and presented them to the governor. The Miyetti Allah leader said the governor was very angry and asked him to put Kungiya Zaman Lafiya on the badges of the uniforms.

He said after the exercise, he realised that the governor planned to remove him from the equation to have full control of the group to perform nefarious activities against the Fulani.

“I know that I am the only person who can stop the group from performing some nefarious activities against the Fulani. So now that I am arrested, his purpose has been accomplished because he knows that I never liked the group before he tactically involved me and backed out during the launch.”

However the governor has denied the allegations of the Miyetti Allah leader.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, Peter Ahemba, urged members of the public to disregard any rumour linking Sule with the establishment of the militia as there was no iota of truth in it.

He said, “The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has no hand in the establishment of the Nomad Vigilante Group of Nigeria. The governor cannot authorise such an establishment when it has not been backed by the laws of the land.

Alia prioritizing quality, accountability in infrastructure delivery — Abo

By Ayihe Festus Sulega

Benue State Commissioner for Information Culture and Tourism, Hon. Abo Matthew, has lauded Gov. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his unwavering commitment to quality infrastructure, financial transparency, and the empowerment of local contractors.

Speaking with some Media representatives recently at his office in Makurdi, Hon. Abo emphasized the administration’s deliberate strategy to match project scope with contractor capacity, particularly when engaging indigenous firms.

“It is a disservice to assign an underpass project to a two-star contractor,” he said. “Just like a child must crawl before they walk and then run, we are gradually building the capacity of local contractors by assigning them smaller projects initially.”

He noted that several indigenous firms have progressed from minor assignments to executing more complex jobs such as short-span bridges and roads extending up to 20–30 kilometers.

Abo, however, explained that while some major infrastructural projects are still awarded to experienced expatriate firms due to technical demands, most of the materials and labour used such as cement, sand, bitumen, and iron rods, are sourced locally.

“This ensures that funds circulate within our local economy, creating jobs and supporting small businesses,” he stated.

The commissioner stressed that the Alia administration remains firmly committed to empowering indigenous contractors while maintaining high standards.

“We are making steady progress. Every year, we allocate good amount of money specifically for inter-local government roads, in addition to other major road projects that link various LGAs.”

He also highlighted a recent inspection tour by senior editors and veteran journalists who visited multiple project sites across the state during the two years administration anniversary of Gov. Alia.

According to Abo, the visitors were highly impressed by both the quality of infrastructure and Benue State’s consistency in honouring payment commitments.

“They were amazed that once a project certificate is verified in Benue, Governor Alia pays almost 100%, no delays, no excuses. I say with confidence, that Benue State despite the insecurity confronting her is still doing very well.

He attributed this financial discipline to the governor’s leadership style, which emphasizes results over media visibility.

Abo added that the governor’s hands-on leadership, backed by a proactive State Executive Council, has ensured that many of the administration’s achievements speak for themselves, even without elaborate commissioning ceremonies.

“There’s so much going on that we haven’t even publicized. But when you come to Benue, the projects speak for themselves.”

He urged citizens and stakeholders to continue supporting the administration, noting that Governor Alia is laying a foundation for inclusive growth and sustainability.

He highlighted key developmental gains across multiple sectors, including roads, education, housing, and healthcare. He noted that over 150 primary health centers have been tiped for revamping, with secondary and tertiary institutions also undergoing upgrades.

“We are procuring advanced medical machines and more to elevate healthcare delivery across the state.”

While refraining from naming specific contractors to avoid undue promotion, Mr. Abo acknowledged the vital roles played by both local and international firms in the state’s ongoing transformation.

“Their work speaks volumes, and we deeply appreciate the professionalism they bring.”

He concluded by reaffirming the administration’s focus on impactful governance, transparency, and long-term development, saying, “Governor Alia remains committed to leaving a legacy of inclusive growth, good governance, and accountable service delivery.”
