🍁 Leave the leaves!
It might seem like a small thing, but I wonder how much plastic we would keep out of the landfills if we all stopped raking our fall leaves, putting them into big black trash bags, and setting them by the curb. 😬
Here’s what you can do instead:
- If you only have a light layer, you can leave them. It’s good for biodiversity and soil health.
- OR, if you have a lot of leaves, you can:
✔️ Put it in your home compost if you have one.
✔️ Utilize municipal yard-waste programs. Many cities and local ‘green’ organizations have programs that collect yard waste and either compost it for you or do something else useful with it. Do a quick internet search to see if there is a service near you and what the rules are. Most require that you put the leaves in paper bags, NOT plastic.
✔️ Make your own ‘leaf mold’ and then use it as mulch. (BUT: Although this is not the same type of toxic mold that grows in water-damaged buildings, it is still fungal in nature and those with CIRS or mold sensitivity could react negatively to it. Use discretion and do what’s best for you.)
Any other tips?!
