My fire lookout obsession started for a very simple reason…

I found out you can actually sleep in some of them. 😂

That was enough to get me interested.

But then I visited a manned fire lookout and got to talk to the woman working there. She explained how they watch for smoke, what they look for, and how the whole thing works. Suddenly these little towers on top of mountains became so much more interesting to me.

And after recently taking a wildland firefighting class, I look at them a little differently now. Things I learned in class started connecting with things she had explained to me, and somehow my little fire lookout obsession got even worse. 😆

So of course, when I realized there was another lookout I could visit on this trip… I had to go.

I still think there’s something so cool about sitting alone up there, surrounded by mountains, watching the landscape for miles in every direction.

And yes, the original goal still stands:

One day, I REALLY want to spend a night in one. 😂🔥🏔️

I started this hike and realized I forgot my bear spray. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Great start...

Once I got down by the river, though, I kept thinking about the Payette River back home in Idaho. The rocks, the clear water, the way it runs through the canyon… it felt strangely familiar even though I was somewhere completely new.

Then I found the waterfall, and obviously I had to get in. 😂 I LOVE cold plunges. There’s something about that first shock of freezing water that completely changes my mood. My brain goes from thinking about a hundred different things to thinking about exactly ONE thing: COLD. COLD. COLD. GET OUT. 🤣 And somehow I always come out ridiculously happy.

I realized my last real cold plunge was almost exactly a year ago in Iceland, when I jumped into the freezing ocean and then ran straight into geothermal water afterward. This time there was no geothermal water waiting for me. 😭😂 Just Wyoming sunshine, a waterfall, and a hike back to the van.

Honestly… still worth it.

I think I’ve been driving the wrong direction all summer… 😂

After hanging out with my workmates watching football, I stayed a little longer to watch the night climbers make their way up the Tower. Then it was finally time to leave and start my weekend adventure.

I didn’t get very far. 😆 I really don’t like driving in the dark, especially after seeing how much wildlife crosses the roads at night, so I found a place to park the van and called it a night.

The next morning, I continued toward the Bighorns and started noticing something along the drive… some of the aspens are already changing colors! 🍂

Then I got to West Tensleep and immediately questioned all of my summer decisions.

WHY did I keep running to the Dakotas when there are alpine lakes and mountains in the opposite direction?! 😂

AllTrails reviews made this area sound busy and crowded, but when I hiked out to the falls, there was nobody around. Just me.

Which would've been amazing… except I realized I forgot my bear spray. 🫠

I’m still pretty new to bear country, so suddenly every crack, rustle and mysterious sound in the trees had my full attention. 😂 I was definitely nervous, but I wasn’t going to let that ruin the hike.

Afterward, I went to the lake, found a sunny spot, pulled out my book and enjoyed doing absolutely nothing for a while. It was cold, but the sun felt so good… until the wind started slapping me in the face and basically told me it was time to go. 😂

I finished the adventure checking out a nearby fire lookout. It was completely closed, but the views around it were still worth the drive.

Then on the way back, another very important milestone happened in Buffalo. I got my van’s propane tank refilled for the first time! 😂

Tiny accomplishment, but apparently we celebrate these things in vanlife.

Then it was back to Devils Tower, where Wyoming welcomed me home with cold and wind while I stood outside washing my dishes.

Very glamorous ending to a beautiful weekend. 😂

So yeah… apparently I’ve been looking east all summer when I should’ve looked west a little more often. 🍂

I’ve been giving myself a little break from long-form videos and spending more time learning about the area I’ve been exploring all season.

Reading The Journey of Crazy Horse after It Happened on the Oregon Trail made me realize how differently the same landscape can be experienced. For some, the West meant opportunity and a new beginning. For others, it meant trying to hold on to a way of life that was already being changed around them.

And what stayed with me most is that even more than a hundred years later, the details may change, but some parts of the human story still feel familiar. People wanting different futures, trying to protect what matters to them, and seeing the same place in completely different ways.

The more I learn about this area, the more differently I see it.

I used to think bravery had to look big.

Something dramatic. Something fearless. Something that made a good story afterward.

But the older I get, the more I think it shows up in much quieter ways.

Sometimes it’s going somewhere alone. Sometimes it’s changing your mind. Sometimes it’s turning around. Sometimes it’s admitting you’re scared and doing it anyway.

And sometimes it looks like a pile of luggage, leaving one chapter of your life behind and having absolutely no idea what the next one is going to look like.

I don’t think being brave means I’m not afraid anymore. I think I’ve just gotten better at letting fear come along without letting it make every decision for me.

Maybe that’s what bravery looks like. ❤️

I swear August lasted about three months. 😂

There were days when I felt like I was constantly going somewhere, fixing something, learning something new, or wondering how I ended up in another completely unexpected situation.

But somewhere in all that chaos, this became one of those months I know I’m going to miss.

I laughed a lot, spent a ridiculous amount of time outside, had some really good people around me, and kept saying yes to things that weren’t exactly part of the plan.

Maybe that’s why I love months like this. Not everything has to make sense while it’s happening. Sometimes you just look back at the end and think…

Damn. That was a good month. 🤎

My best friend Isaiah Coleman came to visit for what I think is officially becoming our annual road trip. 😆 At this point, it might just be tradition.

This year it happened to fall right around my birthday too, which made it even better. 🎂

The funny part is, most of the places we went weren’t new to me. I’ve already been to Devils Tower, Theodore Roosevelt, the Badlands, Black Elk Peak, Wind Cave, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Deadwood.

But somehow, doing them again with someone else made the whole trip feel completely different.

We climbed the boulder field at Devils Tower, got hailed on at our campsite, cowboy camped, finally got my backpacking night in the Badlands, watched lightning in the distance under a sky full of stars, made way too many coffee stops, climbed Black Elk Peak again 😂 and eventually ended right back where we started, Devils Tower for my birthday.

Turns out I didn’t need a completely new destination for this trip to feel special. Sometimes it’s the same places, just with different memories attached to them. 🤎

Apparently the best way I know how to celebrate National Park Day is to put everything I need on my back and disappear into one for the night. 😆🏕️

Rain was in the forecast, but we decided to go anyway. We watched the sun go down over the Badlands, caught a pretty incredible lightning show from a distance, and eventually fell asleep under the stars.

I was secretly hoping we'd wake up to a herd of bison wandering somewhere near camp. 😂 Probably one of those things that's much better in my imagination than in real life.

No herd waiting for us in the morning, but we did get a beautiful sunrise and eventually found a bison nearby.

I've visited a lot of National Parks, but experiences like this are the reason I keep coming back. ❤️

I turn 42 in a few days, and apparently I’m still really into doing things for the first time. 😆

Going places by myself. Waking up somewhere completely different. Changing the plan because something else sounds more fun. And occasionally doing something that scares the crap out of me. 😂

I don’t think I ever want to reach an age where I feel like I’ve seen enough, learned enough, or tried enough.

There’s still so much out there I haven’t done yet.
Kinda chic, I guess. 😆
