This article went to press in our new issue before the ultimate passage of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, along with $14 billion in new subsidy for Israel and assistance for Taiwan. The aid for the Israeli assault on Gaza’s population is an unspeakable obscenity that will be the defining presidential legacy of “Genocide Joe” Biden.

How quickly the urgently needed weaponry for Ukraine is delivered, and whether it will help hold back Vladimir Putin’s attempt to turn Ukraine into another new Gaza, is an open question.

The task of stopping the international spread of right-wing Hindutva ideology is not just for Indian diasporic groups. The broader left has to be involved in resisting Hindutva and its expansion.

The use of lawfare against public protests, as Jeffrey C. Isaac notes, has a long tradition. During the French Revolution, the Cold War, and apartheid-era South Africa, he writes that “authorities acting in the name of the common good have all too [often] invoked ‘public safety’ to justify the violent repression and imprisonment, and more commonly the harassment and firing, of dissenters.”

"For socialists in 2024, many issues at the core of this book will be familiar. Battles over the causes and impacts of mass migration, over the efficacy of parliamentary politics, over the nature of imperialism and war, and over gender equality, continue to be among the most important issues facing society.

Socialists remain divided over how to deal with them, as the messy politics of “big tent” organizations such as the DSA make clear. Taber’s collection is instructive because it shows how, despite very substantial divisions, the international socialist movement was able to provide a political home for millions of socialist workers."

Reform, Revolution, and Opportunism Debates in the Second International, 1900-1910 Mike Taber, editor Chicago: Haymarket Books, 2023, 272 pages, $21.95 paperback. ONE OF THE positive results of the…

"Shatz’s unsettling appraisals may be just what we require at this fraught political moment. They speak to several issues turbo-charged by the 7 October 2023 bloodshed in Israel, and the industrial-scale genocidal onslaught that has followed. His well-versed approach may help clarify long festering debates about what constitutes meaningful socialist commitment to Palestinian liberation and the indispensable eradication of Zionist settler-colonialism."

ATC Editor Alan Wald reviews Adam Shatz's new book, "Writers and Missionaries: Essays on the Radical Imagination." (Verso Books, 2023)
