In 2018, I watched a nice 3 year old 10 point cross a hill in front of me on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I let him go that day, not knowing that deer would drive me crazy for years to come. I hunted him in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and this year in 2023.

In all that time I had only 1 encounter with him. Then yesterday, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, he finally made a fatal mistake. I called this old ghost the 2% buck because every year I gave myself only a 2% chance of killing him. He embodies everything about why we as hunters chase and hunt big, old, smart, whitetail bucks. A five year quest has finally come to an end.

As always, a HUGE shoutout to my amazing wife who puts up with me and this addiction I have. She’s the real hero of this story!

Stone is down! I had a feeling that the deer would be out early after being hunkered down all night in the storm. With 45 minutes of legal light left Stone came out to 18 yards and gave me a perfect quartering away shot.

My very first sit of the year and by far the earliest in the season I have ever taken a buck. As always a HUGE shoutout to my amazing wife who is keeping our sweet daughter so I can chase these critters I love so much!
