An absolute legend, Popcorn Sutton was an American Appalachian moonshiner and bootlegger up until 2009. Today is the anniversary of the death of Hiram Walker. As a young man in 1858 he established his distillery on the Canadian side of the border across from Detroit, MI where he was living. He found success as a distiller making his famous Canadian Club Whisky that ended up being the top whisky exporter of Canada.

Cheers to National Happy Hour Day! As whiskey lovers, we enjoy a good happy hour. It's said that the term "Happy Hour" originally started as a program in the Navy to entertain men aboard the USS Arkansas while out at sea. As time went on the term was more often used to describe government contractors and military personnel going out for drinks in the afternoon, rather than entertainment on the ship.

On this day in 1931 Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. His role during the prohibition allowed for whiskey to keep flowing in the US, and also made himself a lot of enemies at the same time. Al Capone was released early because of his deteriorating health due to neurosyphilis and ended up suffering from multiple strokes. The part he played in the Prohibition Era lives on in legend today.

Today we're celebrating National Whiskey Sour Day! This classic cocktail was first mentioned in 1862, when it was included in Jerry Thomas' The Bartender's Guide. The original recipe read:
(Use a small bar-glass.)
Take 1 large tea-spoonful of powdered white sugar dissolved in a little Seltzer or Apollinaris water
The juice of half a small lemon
1 wine-glass of Bourbon or rye whiskey
Fill the glass full of shaved ice, shake up and strain into a claret glass. Ornament with berries.
