Spencer County Music Fest Rescheduled to October 24 & 25 Due to Forecasted Weather

GRANDVIEW, IN (July 15, 2025)– Due to the threat of severe weather, the Spencer County Music Fest, originally scheduled for July 18 & 19, is being rescheduled to October 24 & 25, 2025, and will now take place at the Grandview Boat Dock off Highway 66.

While the decision to postpone and relocate was not made lightly, the safety of festivalgoers, performers, vendors, and volunteers remains the top priority.

“We were all looking forward to an incredible weekend of live music, food, and fun, but the current weather outlook makes it too risky to move forward as planned,” said Nan Cassidy, festival director. “We’re excited to bring everyone back together in October for an even bigger celebration, this time with candy!”

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates.

The updated festival at the Grandview Boat Dock will still feature an exciting lineup of live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities, now with a fall twist. Details about artist schedules, vendor participation, and the Truck or Treat event will be announced soon.

Grow Spencer County welcomes second new family under Make My Move program

Lisa Stuteville of Grow Spencer County officially welcomed the Pierce family to Spencer County at the June 25 Talk of the Towns event at the Grandview Civic Center. The newest residents of the Mariah Hill area represent the second family to relocate to this county under the Make My Move program, an initiative spearheaded by Grow Spencer County to attract new residents. The new family includes Shelbi and Cody Pierce and their sons, Cody and Aiden.

Grow Spencer County is the successor organization to Spencer County Economic Development and Lincolnland Economic Development Corporation. While attracting new businesses remains a priority, Stuteville highlighted the impact even one new family could make on a community.

For example, a household with an annual income of $126,000 constitutes an annual tax contribution of $8,600 locally. All participants in Make My Move must have an income of at least $50,000 annually, currently reside outside the state and have immediate access to full-time employment or self employment. They must also pass a criminal background check.

Local businesses have pooled resources to help sweeten the deal of mov- ing to Spencer County. The total value of the incentive package is valued at $6,850, and includes everything from financial services from local banks to Holiday World passes.
So far, Grow Spencer County has signed up five families under this program. The remaining three are expected to arrive in the fall.

Patriot Parlor churning out cool treats for the summer season

Patriot Parlor is officially up and running, based out of Heritage Hills’ Career and Technical Education building. Students of Paul Steinmetz’s class were hard at work Thursday, preparing their last couple batches of ice cream for the school year. The student-run business serves as a wholesaler for local organizations.

Some customers include the Fulda 4-H Club and Heritage Hills Band Boosters. Proceeds from these ice cream sales benefit community efforts, as well as keep the school’s operation humming.

Steinmetz hopes to secure grants over the summer to add more equipment, including a bar coder and more freezer space to assist with inventory management.

While still in its early phases, Patriot Parlor has all the necessary permits to sell its product. Reviews have been favorable thus far, and Steinmetz hopes to keep some students involved in the business over the summer to keep up production during vacation season. He also hopes to implement a system of redistributing profits to participating students based on the time they put in.

“We’re completely ready to go,” said Steinmetz. “We’ve been doing pretty well.”

Agriculture hits the asphalt as SCCOA receives new tires from Indiana Soybean Alliance

While the weather can have a big impact on the timing and yield of a soybean crop, soybean oils can help make tires more pliable and weather resistant, especially in wet or cold conditions. The Spencer County Council on Aging will get a chance to see these benefits in action soon, as one of its seven vans is fully decked out in new tires produced from this homegrown product.

The new tires were donated by the Indiana Soybean Alliance in a ceremony the afternoon of June 14th, in between bouts of rainfall. The soy-based tires were produced in partnership between the United Soybean Board and Goodyear Tire, and the ISA has awarded four non-profit organizations across the state with sets of tires to suit their needs.

Derika Spaetti, local board director for the ISA, said the use of soybean oils as a substitute for petroleum has many benefits. Goodyear estimates that 8% of a typical tire consists of oil, and the company sells more than 40 million tires in the United States and Canada every year. Spaetti noted that substituting even a fraction of that total with renewable soybean oils can save a great deal of petroleum for other uses.

According to a study by US Soy, soybean oil maintains a significantly lower carbon footprint than other major plant-derived oils, such as rapeseed, palm or sunflower. Goodyear began experimenting with incorporating soybean oil into tires in 2012, and had began selling them in 2017. The company has increased its use of soybean oil by 73% since 2018, and has exceeded its goal of a 25% increase by 2020. Goodyear hopes to fully replace petroleum- based oils by 2040.

More information on Goodyear’s soybased tires can be found at www.goodyear.com. For more information about the United Soybean Board, go online to www.unitedsoybean.org.
