Teach me thy way, O Lord, and LEAD ME in a PLAIN path, because of mine enemies. (Psa. 27:11)

LEAD ME, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way STRAIGHT before my face. (Psa. 5:8)

There are enemies that will hinder our obedience... some are quiet, others are loud, some are people, many are not...

But the Psalmist asks the Lord to make his path plain and straight (plain as the nose on his face!)

"Ask yourself, am I asking God to lead me, or am I asking Him to bless the way I've chosen?"*

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. (Prov. 4:25-27)

"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee." Isaiah 43:2

In the past year, many have experienced personal tragedy. On a larger scale, we have witnessed national tragedies unfold in the news.

What are some Biblical Truths about Tragedies?

1. Suffering is not proportional to sinfulness.
2. We should not attribute tragedies to the vengeance of God.
3. Bad things do not only happen to bad people.
4. We don't always get to know what God is doing.

It is important to remember:

1. God is eternal. Do not make the mistake of dealing with tragedy from a temporal point of view.
God is just - not unjust.
God is good.
2. God has a purpose - which ultimately will bring glory to Himself.
3. God has a plan - this may include equipping His saint(s).
4. God has also suffered - He is no stranger to injustice and pain.
5. The greatest tragedy of all is to fail to prepare for death.

"Fear not: for I am with thee." Isaiah 43:5a

“A Sure Walk” for Christian Ladies (31 Days): Day 31 Sat.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely. Prov. 10:9a

Dear Christian Friend,

Saturday’s Song!

It seems fitting to close out the month with a song. “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.” (Psa. 28:7)

Today’s song is titled “He Loved Me.” There is especially powerful phrasing that leads off the chorus with the words, “Of this I am SURE” followed by the declaration that none of these things can separate us from the love of God: tribulation, distress, persecution... This grand assurance is taken from the following passage: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Dear Christian Friend,

“Friday’s Quote”

"Just two choices on the shelf: pleasing God or pleasing self." ~ Ken Collier

God is not pleased when His children, who are called to walk as children of light, allow themselves to be deceived and moved by the words and opinions of men.

“For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts” 1 Thessalonians 2:3-4.

It is God which trieth our hearts! He honors sincerity, obedience, truthfulness. “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” Heb. 13:5-6. There is a discontentment that often stems from unhappy comparison. I may desire to have what others have or to be the kind of person I suppose them to be. That is living my life looking around at men rather than upwards toward God. It is hard to have a sure walk when I’m jealous of the person next to me. Make the choice to please God today, tomorrow, and all year long.

“A Sure Walk” for Christian Ladies (31 Days): Day 29 Thu.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely. Prov. 10:9a

Dear Christian Friend,

Our Verse for the Day: “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” (Rom. 8:31-34)

“If God be for us, who can be against us?” We do not need to fear the past, present, or future. The Christian is uniquely able to experience freedom from fear, because “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” 2 Cor. 3:17.

“But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God” 1 Cor. 4:3-5.

It is God Who brings hidden things to light and manifests the hearts of men. Sometimes, choosing to please God rather than man requires waiting for God’s timing. The relief that vindication in the eyes of men can bring does not always come when we hope for it.

But “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant” Psa. 25:14. What a privilege! This verse reminds me of the words of Job in chapter 26 and verse 14: “Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? But the thunder of his power who can understand?” How little we understand the “why’s” of life! And even if we could understand, the greatness of God’s power would overwhelm us. Therefore, we are called to obey what we know and He will gently lead us on. “What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose” Psa. 25:12.

“A Sure Walk” for Christian Ladies (31 Days): Day 28 Wed.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely. Prov. 10:9a

Dear Christian Friend,

Our Verse for the Day: “I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” (Psa. 118:5-9)

Why fear God rather than men? When the Psalmist speaks of calling upon the Lord in a time of trouble, the Lord answers and sets him “in a large place.” The idea of “a large place” is having “room to breathe.” We can all relate to that, can’t we?

Simply put, “it is better” to please God than fear man.

Can you think of some ways that “it is better”? Below are just a few:

*He is a better Savior.

*He is a better (and more faithful!) companion and friend.

*Fear of God promises a better (and smarter!) future.

The Lord comforts those that are in fear, for fear hath torment. The fear of man, as we have learned, hath a snare. We often fear beyond what is reasonable. And truthfully, when we catch ourselves succumbing to fears and worries at the level of torment, we are forgetting the Lord our Maker. We are forgetting His providence and His promises. John 10:10 tells us “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” But the Lord reminds us: “I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?” Isa. 51:12-13.

God’s direction to us is “Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long” Prov. 23:17.

“A Sure Walk” for Christian Ladies (31 Days): Day 27 Tue.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely. Prov. 10:9a

Dear Christian Friend,

Our Verse for the Day: “In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” (Prov. 14:26)

A great tragedy occurs when we follow the fear of man into self-isolation. We become fearful and guarded and cut ourselves off from everyone. Fear breeds fear breeds fear.

Some of these emotions are expressed in Psa. 142 as the writer states that “no man cared for my soul.” His fear trapped him with feelings of isolation, which led to depression. “I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication. I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living. Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.”

Fear of the opinions of man causes me to turn inward and conceal my thoughts, hurts, and struggles. But turning inward only fuels the feeling of loneliness. Although we hear the despair in the middle of this Psalm, the psalmist chooses to secure his feelings in God’s truth. He accepts that God is God and He is good! God’s children have a place of refuge.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely. Prov. 10:9a

Dear Christian Friend,

Our Verse for the Day: “And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” (Gen. 5:23-24)

We know that Enoch walked with God, and that pleased God. “To walk with God is to set God always before us, and to act as those that are always under his eye. It is to live a life of communion with God….to make God’s word our rule and his glory our end in all our actions. It is to make it our constant care and endeavour in every thing to please God, and nothing to offend him. It is to comply with his will and to be workers together with him. It is to be followers of him as dear children.” (Matthew Henry)

“For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.” (Psa. 11:7)

“The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.” (Prov. 11:6)
