by 🎧 NEW EPISODE of the High Point podcast– EP44: Designing Kristinehallen Concert Hall

🪵🏛️🎶 Sustainable timber design meets acoustic precision in the heart of Falun, Sweden.

In this episode, we speak with Emmy Lund from Falugruppen Arkitektkontor AB and Emma Hellström from Stora Enso about the complex redesign of the Kristinehallen Concert Hall.

A project that pushed architectural and engineering boundaries within a heritage-listed context.

🔍 Inside the episode:

🎤 The decision to feature exposed timber beams — and the acoustic challenges that came with it

🎤 A strategic design change that saved nearly 10 million SEK 💰

🎤 Blending CLT and concrete to meet demanding acoustic, accessibility, and budget goals

🎤 Working under the constraints of a protected heritage site

This conversation highlights the balance between design ambition, sustainability, and real-world constraints.

🎙️ Thank you to Stora Enso
Their support was essential in bringing this episode to life — from organising logistics to providing deep technical insight.

We’re grateful for your collaboration and ongoing contribution to sustainable building practices.

🔊 Ever wondered what dBA, dBC, or dBB levels actually mean?

It’s not just technical jargon — these values are adjusted to reflect how humans perceive loudness. 👂📉

When we measure sound, we don’t just record raw data. Instead, we shape it using frequency-weighting curves — A, B, C, and Z — to better match the sensitivity of the human ear at different volumes and frequencies.

That’s how we get:

📏 dBA — reflects our hearing at low to moderate volumes (most commonly used)

📏 dBC — used for louder environments and low-frequency noise

📏 dBB — rare, but sits somewhere between A and C

In this post, we break down:
✅ What these weighting curves are
✅ Why they matter
✅ How they help make sound measurement more meaningful

🎧 Understanding this helps bridge the gap between numbers on a meter and how we actually experience sound.

🎭 How do you control sound in theatres and concert halls built with mass timber? 🪵
That’s where box-in-box construction becomes essential.

Mass timber brings beauty, sustainability, and speed to venue design — but sound insulation, especially at low frequencies, is a major technical challenge.

In venues like theatres, concert halls, or sports arenas located near sensitive areas, acoustic performance often hinges on how well we isolate the performance space.

That’s where the box-in-box system comes in — a proven solution that physically separates the noisy interior from the structural shell, dramatically reducing vibration transfer.

In my latest blog post, I dive into how this works, when it’s necessary, and how to integrate it with sustainable materials and efficient construction.

Episode 28 of the High Point podcast is out and this time it is with Seb Laan Lomas Associate and Passivhaus Designer at !

In this conversation, Seb his journey into sustainable architecture, the importance of bio-based materials, and the principles of Passivhaus design.

He emphasises the need for education and regulation in the construction industry to address climate change and improve building performance.

The conversation also touches on the challenges of retrofitting existing buildings to meet modern sustainability standards and the role of organisations like Timber Development UK and ASBP in promoting sustainable practices.

🚁 With the High Point podcast, we are now flying in and around theatres!

Earlier this week, we went to Great Yarmouth to record a new episode of the High Point podcast at St George Theatre.

And we can finally say that we have been able to fly our mini fpv drone in and around the theatre More precisely:

🚁 over the seats

🚁 around the tower outside

🚁 through the roof structure

🚁 from the balconies

We have lots of video editing to do now, but hopefully it won't be too long until the episode is out.

Stay tuned!

🎤 know how and when the first cajons came to Europe

🎤 the history of Schlagwerk

🎤 the process of making cajons

🎤 what features make cajons sound better

🎤 how a sustainable factory works (generating electricity with solar panels most of the time, building the factory with mass timber elements, using plastic free packaging as much as possible, etc)

🎤 quality testing the cajons

🎤 figure out how different cajons sound
