WHAT IS HOLIDAY HEART SYNDROME?

Holiday gatherings fueled by fatty and salty meals and lots of booze to wash them down can result in what doctors refer to as holiday heart syndrome or HHS. Holiday Heart Syndrome is a serious medical condition that frequently develops around Christmas and the end-of-the-year celebrations.

Coined in 1978, it describes a dramatic increase in emergency cases between December and early January of the following year when patients complained of abnormal heartbeats known as atrial fibrillation

Fatty and salty meals, add in the usual Christmas stress plus a lack of good sleep, and you have a recipe for disaster. People who have had a previous history of heart failure or other cardiac disorders are more likely to experience major consequences, including death.

While food and alcohol are both social glue and are enjoyable to consume, people should be aware that, as with anything we ingest, too much of a good thing can lead to effects that are highly undesirable and serious. Moderation is still the key.
