So many people say to me:
"I'm not a writer."
"I don't know where to start."
But we are ALLLLLL natural-born storytellers! 🙌🏽 Here are 2 (very simple, very easy) tips that can help you get started:
1. Who is your story for?
Seems obvious, right? But, without clarity on who your audience is, you end up with a story that's ALL about you and, not at ALL about your customer. That's a NO-NO ☝🏼
Find out what your ideal customer REALLY wants, then work out how your brand and business can align with those needs.
2. Let's plot
Christopher Booker developed the theory that we live in a world where 7 plot archetypes play out in every story we consume.
It sounds bonkers, but it's true!
These story archetypes help us connect with our audiences, which may be experiencing the same scenario in their lives.
For example, lets look at the example of the "REBIRTH" archetype:
You started persuing a goal and disconnected from your true calling in life. Maybe it was a job that sucked your soul or a relationship that left you empty. At some point you decide to change. Something transformed your life and you've never been the same since 👏🏻
If your customer is looking for transformation and they don't really believe in themselves, somewhere on the inside, they're thinking "this isn't possible for me". Hearing your story of rebirth will help inspire them and activate them to pursue the change they are seeking.
The 7 story archetypes are:
- Overcoming the Monster
- Rags to Riches
- The Quest
- Voyage and Return
- Comedy
- Tragedy
- Rebirth
