After earning my BS in Agricultural Education I spent several years working for Iowa State University College of Agriculture in Student Services. Recruiting and promoting the college was an important part of my job - which largely consisted of explaining to parents and students that agriculture was so much more than cows, plows and sows. Now more than at the heart of Agriculture is science, technology, engineering, food science, Computer science, horticulture, genetics, forestry, natural resources management, ecology and so so much more!

It’s time we change the definition of “agriculture” to showcase the broader food, technology, science, education, media, and other aspects of the industry.

This is IMPORTANT- give me 5 min of your time!

Last night the fire in Northern New Mexico became the LARGEST in state history. I have 29,000 followers on Instagram & got curious… So, I made a poll that asked who had heard about the fire. It’s been up for ONE HOUR as a write this & 80% have said they’ve never heard of it outside MY content. No news article, no tv talk, no online activity.

That’s downright INFURIATING to those of us living it. How is this not news? A government prescribed burn that lost control & has now consumed nearly 300,000 acres of national forest & private property… Sounds like news to me.

So, here’s the solution.
If you know anyone who has a podcast, blog, or connections to online platforms like Buzzfeed TAG THEM HERE or send them my content. I’ve already done one podcast so far but we need to get this out there.

I will not only do interviews myself but I will also connect outlets with locals from all walks of life - teachers, veterinarians, business owners, students, ranchers, volunteer firefighters.

My voice isn’t enough, but together we can do something BIG! Let’s get to work.

Hopefully we can learn enough from history to avoid the same tragedies.

Personally, I am closer to my vets than I am any of my family's physicians... If I could, I would get treated by my vets because if they can figure out what is wrong with hundreds of different species (that can't even talk), then I think they would have a good shot at fixing me up without having to even come out of the field!.

My guest on this episode is Dr. Romy Nicoletta is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. She owns a veterinary practice in Walsenburg, Colorado. She talks about the veterinarian shortage that has been exacerbated by retiring vets and the Covid pet craze. She also talks about the 2021 fight in Colorado over ballot initiative 16. Initiative 16 called for a change in criminal cruelty to animal statutes even though there are already protections in place for animals. Initiative 16 would have expanded animal statutes to include criminalizing certain animal husbandry practices, including procedures for common and routine animal care and management treatments.

All producers throughout the world are connected to similar issues as well as their love and connectedness to the land. My guest this week, Didier Dubrui, is a first generation cattle producer who was mentored in the state of Arizona some years ago and took his knowledge “across the pond” to France.

Just as in the United States -where 98% of the population rely on the other 2% to nurish and clothe- the same is true throughout the globe. The challenges that producers, particularly smaller family farmers, face with regards to pricing, access to markets and pressure from animal extremists span country lines and oceans. .

This guy! Salt of the Earth … would drop everything to lend a hand to someone in need; drive supplies to zoo friends with hurricane damage, gather cattle for a friends, even help a neighbor catch by bulldogging a young bull. God didn’t make a lot of these models, so I’m sure am glad he’s in my life. We’ve picked up several good horses from the sale barn. We have 4-6 year old horses that are gentle babysitters, honest and kind 14 year old horses that have enough go for a hand or plenty of woa for a trail ride.

As hay prices rise the horse prices are plummeting before our eyes. We picked up a real nice dude horse for $600- practically killer price.. The exception is mini horses and Shetland ponies. People are still paying top dollar for ornery little equids. There was a pony at the same sale that went for more than $3k. I speak from experience that kids are nearly guaranteed to have these little steeds buck, pull a runaway or rub em off on fence or pin under a tree.

I always say each day is an exercise in risk management - whether conscious or not. What it says about parents that pick a cute little pony for their kids is this: 1. The parent doesn’t know a lot about horses and thinks they are mitigating their own risk to harm and ego by getting the “fun size”; 2. The parent is calculating that the kid is going to hit the dirt and the shorter distance to the ground will outweigh the number of times the kid is going to hit the ground.

And here’s where the philosophy intersects real life. Kids are resilient and shaped by both the times they hit the dirt and the times they stay in the saddle. A parent’s intent to shelter them can be a result of their own fears. Sometimes one hard long fall is a better teacher than a bunch of short falls in the long run. Let your kid ride the big horse and hedge that they’ll stay on instead of expecting them to fall. When they do help them back in the saddle.
