Our freedom was never a gift handed down; it was a legacy paid for in blood, courage, and conviction by those who refused to be broken. As the nation marks another year of Philippine Independence, this June 12 reminds us that independence isn’t just a date in history to look back on with pride, but a living responsibility we carry every day — to question, to speak truth, and to stand for a future worth fighting for.

Sa bawat sinag ng araw at bituin sa ating watawat, may kuwento ng walang-sawang pag-asa at pagtindig para sa bayan. One hundred twenty-six years later, the duty to protect that freedom still rests on the unwavering Filipino spirit within us.

𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤+ 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

For many LGBTQ+ students, school is not always a safe and comforting place. Beyond the bright classrooms and cheerful laughter are students silently carrying the weight of teasing and judgment each day.

What many people dismiss as harmless jokes can leave invisible scars. Casual comments about the way someone acts, dresses, or expresses themselves can hurt more than we think. And behind those passing laughs are students whose confidence slowly fades piece by piece, like glitter swept away.

LGBTQ+ students become careful about everything they do. Joining activities, speaking during discussions, or simply being themselves can suddenly feel terrifying because of the fear of whispers, stares, and ridicule. Instead of fully enjoying their school life, many spend their days trying not to stand out.

Because of this, some students begin hiding parts of who they are. Some soften their voices, avoid attention, or stay silent even when they have something meaningful to say. Others change the way they act just to protect themselves from becoming the next topic of mockery. The colorful parts of their identity slowly dim, not because they want to disappear, but because they are afraid of being judged for shining too brightly.

These experiences may seem small to some people, but repeated teasing and silent discrimination can deeply affect a student's confidence, comfort, mental well-being, and sense of belonging. Behind smiles and participation in school activities are students quietly fighting emotional battles that often go unnoticed beneath the noise of everyday school life.

Still, despite these struggles, LGBTQ+ students continue to rise with courage and resilience. They continue chasing their dreams, excelling in academics, joining organizations, and expressing creativity even in spaces where acceptance is not always guaranteed. Like a radiant rainbow, they continue to shine through the challenges they face.

Every student deserves to feel safe and free to express themselves without fear. Schools should become welcoming spaces filled with compassion and understanding, communities where every student, regardless of identity, can sparkle unapologetically, walk the hallways with confidence, and feel proud of the person they are becoming.

𝙉𝙀𝙒𝙎 | 𝗦𝗟𝗦𝗨-𝗟𝗛𝗦 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀

"To get something you never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done."

With these inspiring words, guest speaker Miss Jennifer Gail C. Carbo, RN challenged students to pursue greater heights as the Southern Leyte State University-Tomas Oppus Campus Laboratory High School (SLSU-TO LHS) conducted its Recognition Rites on June 1, 2026 at the campus covered court, honoring students for their academic achievements, leadership, and dedication throughout the school year.

The ceremony opened with an invocation led by Miss Karishma Glyhel A. Sala, SBO President, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem conducted by Mrs. Haidelyn J. Sacro. In her welcome talk, Dr. Sybill Krizzia L. Cabarrubias, Principal of the Laboratory High School, welcomed students, parents, faculty members, and guests to the celebration.

The guest speaker was introduced by Dr. Norlyn L. Borong, Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Education. During her message, Carbo emphasized the value of perseverance, courage, and continuous self-improvement, encouraging students to step beyond their comfort zones in pursuit of their dreams and aspirations.

Following the inspirational message, Dr. Clemente H. Cobilla, Campus Director, presented a plaque of appreciation to the guest speaker in recognition of her valuable contribution to the event.

The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of certificates of recognition to students who demonstrated academic excellence. The recognition was led by Dr. Cobilla, assisted by Dr. Borong and Dr. Cabarrubias. The event also recognized the accomplishments and service of the Student Body Organization (SBO) Officers for School Year 2025–2026, acknowledging their efforts in promoting student welfare and leadership within the school community.

Another significant part of the program was the presentation of Alumni Resolution 2024 by Dr. Borong in her capacity as President of the SLSU-TO Alumni Association. The resolution was subsequently approved and confirmed by Dr. Cobilla. This was followed by a special oath-taking ceremony involving Grade 11 students and the awarding of certificates to alumni members.

Representing the alumni, Angel Ingrid Cadavos delivered a response message, expressing gratitude for the continued support of the institution and encouraging students to uphold the values and traditions of the school.

The program concluded with closing remarks from Miss Kyza L. Quimpan, Adviser of Grade 8, followed by the singing of the SLSU Hymn.

The Recognition Rites served as a celebration of excellence, leadership, and commitment, inspiring students to continue striving for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Words are not enough to express how grateful we are to have had you as part of our publication. From our Managing Editor to our Chief Broadcaster, and our talented and active Correspondents, each of you has played a significant role and made a lasting impact in shaping what our publication is today.

Good luck on your journey and in the next chapter you are about to conquer. Always remember that even though you will be leaving this publication, the footprints of your hard work will never be erased, and we will follow them with hearts ready to serve.

‘𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮, 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗼’

Senator Robin Padilla gave a statement that got many people talking. He thinks that young people today are not tough enough. He said that when he and his generation were young, people did not get depressed or anxious, and if someone cried, it meant they were not strong.

Senator Robin Padilla said this, and many found it difficult to believe. He makes it sound as though being strong means not showing your feelings. But is that really what strength means? Some critics argue that Senator Robin Padilla says one thing but does another.

During a Senate session, Senator Kiko Pangilinan raised his voice at Senator Robin Padilla during a discussion. He was not threatening him; he was speaking loudly and criticizing him, which is not unusual in Senate debates. Senator Robin Padilla did not appreciate it and became upset. This is the same Senator Robin Padilla who said that young people today are too sensitive. When someone raised their voice at him, he became upset. This led some people to question what that says about his position.

If getting upset makes young people weak, then what does it say about Senator Robin Padilla? He is a senator who became upset when someone spoke to him in a raised voice.

Senator Robin Padilla also said that depression did not exist when he was young. Many disagree with this statement. Depression has always existed; people simply did not talk about it openly. They often kept silent about it and, in some cases, passed unresolved struggles to the next generation. Just because people did not talk about depression does not mean it did not exist. It means that it remained unspoken.

Today, many young people talk openly about their feelings and ask for help. That takes courage. For many, that is what strength truly means. Senator Robin Padilla said that young people today are weak, but others argue that they are strong because they acknowledge their emotions and address them instead of remaining silent.

In the Philippines, politicians often associate toughness with leadership. However, some people believe there are double standards. If a young person talks about being exhausted or hurt by ridicule, they may be criticized. Yet when a public official becomes emotional or upset, people are often more understanding. Critics argue that this imbalance is unfair.

Many believe that true strength means following the standards you expect from others. Critics claim that Senator Robin Padilla sets expectations that he himself does not consistently demonstrate.

We, the young people of the Philippines whom Senator Robin Padilla referred to, face different struggles. Some have jobs, while others deal with academic pressure, financial difficulties, and poverty. Many feel that politicians do not always listen to them. They argue that they are not crying because they are weak; rather, they cry because some situations are genuinely difficult.

Many young people have decided that pretending everything is fine does not help. To them, strength means showing up even when life is difficult, taking responsibility, and listening to others even when they say things that are hard to hear. Some believe that what happened in the Senate was not an example of strength but rather an example of inconsistency or hypocrisy.

The Southern Leyte State University–Tomas Oppus Laboratory High School proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of its alumnus, Kim A. Gorduiz, who ranked Top 5 in the March 2026 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) with an impressive rating of 94.20%.

A graduate of LHS-HUMSS Batch 2020–2021, a Cum Laude graduate of the BSEd-Science program at SLSU-TO, and a resident of Bontoc, Southern Leyte, Kim’s success reflects the excellence and strong foundation nurtured by the institution.

His accomplishment is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and dedication, serving as an inspiration to aspiring educators and students alike.
