J J McCarthy Declares for NFL Draft + Washington Players Blindsided By Deboer Departure
Michigan Football QB J.J. McCarthy announced on social media that he will be entering the NFL draft.
After three incredible years at the University of Michigan, I have decided to enter the 2024 NFL draft,” McCarthy wrote in a statement posted to social media.

I have talked to many in and out of football, including my family, Coach Harbaugh, and many whose opinions I greatly admire and respect. The decision was not easy and how could it be — I love my teammates. I love my coaches and I love it here in Ann Arbor.”

McCarthy's longtime girlfriend, Katya, shared her reaction to the decision on social media.

"Best time of our lives.....sad to see it go but excited for the next journey," she wrote.

"You deserve everything that comes your way. I am beyond proud of you. I love you forever.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ helmet was damaged during Saturday night’s game, with a big chunk of the plastic shell breaking off in a collision. Mahomes said he had never seen that happen to a football helmet before, and he had also never played in conditions so cold before.“I have not,” Mahomes said. “I’m sure it had to do with it being really cold.”Mahomes said he didn’t realize his helmet was broken until teammates told him, and that he wanted to stay in the game even with a compromised helmet.“I didn’t know what happened in the moment but I got in the huddle and everyone was telling me, but I was like, ‘I got y’all, but I’m not coming out of the game, so we can figure it out on the sideline,’” Mahomes said. “It was a first for me.”Eventually the officials stopped play so that a replacement helmet could be given to Mahomes, but Mahomes said that helmet was so cold that it was difficult to get on his head.“They have a backup that’s out there. We have to talk about where we store the backup because it was frozen — when I tried to put it on it was completely frozen. I couldn’t put it on,” Mahomes said. It all worked out, but this never should have happened. The companies that manufacture football helmets are required to put them through safety testing before the helmets are approved for use in the NFL, but it’s unclear whether that testing is done under the extreme temperatures that Kansas City experienced on Saturday night. Both the NFL and the NFL Players Association should insist on testing helmets in subzero temperatures — and if there’s some temperature at which it’s too cold for helmets to perform reliably, then it’s too cold to play.

The NFL playoffs are finally upon us. Although there will be some familiar faces in the playoffs this year -- like the 49ers, Chiefs and Cowboys -- there will also be some new blood. As a matter of fact, of the four teams in NFL history that have never been to a Super Bowl, three of them -- Houston, Cleveland and Detroit -- are in the playoffs this year. Unfortunately for the Browns though, their trip to the postseason didn't last long. As for Detroit, the Lions will be hosting their first playoff game in 30 years and in a twist, they'll be facing someone they're very familiar with: Matthew Stafford. With Jared Goff starting for the Lions, the game between Los Angeles and Detroit will mark the first time in playoff history where both starting quarterbacks are facing their former team. That game will be going down on Sunday at 8 p. m. ET on NBC. This year's playoffs will also feature an NFL rarity: A postponed game. The Steelers and Bills were supposed to play on Sunday in Buffalo, but the NFL made the decision to move that game to Monday due to inclement weather in Western New York.
