Mike is joined by Robert Bellissimo and Philip Marinello to explore O Pagador de Promessas (1962), the landmark Brazilian drama from director Anselmo Duarte. Also known internationally as The Given Word, the film adapts Dias Gomes’s acclaimed stage play into a sharp critique of institutional power.

The story centers on Zé do B***o, a simple farmer who treks over 20 miles into Salvador while bearing a heavy cross—honoring a vow to Saint Barbara after his donkey, Nicholas, falls ill. What begins as a devout act of gratitude becomes a battleground of bureaucracy, media exploitation, and religious gatekeeping. Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Duarte’s film remains a bold and timely meditation on class, faith, and the politics of devotion.

This may be it. We may have reached the nadir of Chevy Chase's filmography with the 2006 film from director Leslie Greif, Funny Money. Based on a play by Ray Cooney, the film feels incredibly stage-bound and like a pale imitation of better screwball comedies. Hold on to your sides, they're about to be split!

In Funny Money, Chase plays a fake fruit engineer whose boss (Robert Loggia) comes to visit his home on the same night that Chase finds a briefcase filled with five million dollars. It's just one wacky cliche after another and a complete waste of all talent involved in the film.

Mark, Chris, and Mike experienced this cinematic car crash so you don't have to.

It’s here. The one we’ve all been bracing for: Last Salute to the Commodore. As the final episode of Columbo’s fifth season and a proposed ending place for the entire NBC run, it manages to sink the ship with an almost gleeful disregard for coherence, tone, and character.

Mike and Chris try to make sense of the chaos—was it Jackson Gillis’s bewildering script? Patrick McGoohan’s direction? Peter Falk’s performance? Or all of the above? Whatever happened, the result is a baffling, self-sabotaging parody of the show itself. Come for the messy nautical metaphors, stay for the analysis of Columbo’s most infamous misfire.

Episode 746: The Brave (1997)
Special Guest: Paul McCudden
Guest Co-Hosts: Jedidiah Ayres, Spencer Parsons

The Projection Booth continues its spotlight on rare and elusive cinema with The Brave (1997), Johnny Depp’s feature directorial debut and a film shrouded in mystery since its limited release. Adapted by screenwriter Paul McCuddin from a novel by Fletch author Gregory McDonald, The Brave tells the harrowing story of Rafael, a Native American man who agrees to sacrifice himself in a s***f film to provide for his impoverished family.

Joining Mike to dissect this bleak, emotionally charged drama are returning co-hosts Spencer Parsons and Jedidiah Ayres, along with special guest Paul McCudden himself, who discusses the film’s challenging adaptation process, its Cannes debut, and the complicated legacy that followed. We dive deep into The Brave's haunting themes, and controversial reception.

On this episode of The Kulturecast, Mike White, Father Malone, and Chris Stachiw wrangle with The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972), a shaggy, mythic Western brought to life—or perhaps strangled—by director John Huston and star Paul Newman. The trio digs into John Milius's wild, operatic script, packed with larger-than-life frontier chaos, and asks whether Huston's revisionist instincts and Newman's laid-back performance undercut the film's outlaw poetry. It's a strange, lurching ride through the West that might leave you pondering how history gets whitewashed, lionized, or laughed off entirely.

Mike, Mark, and Chris take a closer look at Funny Farm (1988), Chevy Chase’s turn as a New York sportswriter who relocates to small-town Vermont in search of a simpler life—only to find frustration, isolation, and a town that seems determined to break him.

Directed by George Roy Hill, the film mixes dry satire with broad physical comedy, offering a darker, more cynical take on the rural escape fantasy. The trio discuss how Funny Farm fits within Chevy’s late-’80s filmography, the tonal balance between charm and bitterness, and whether the film deserves its reputation as a solid entry in his career or a footnote.

Mike White (The Projection Booth), Mark Begley (Wake Up Heavy), and Chris Stachiw (The Kulturecast) saddle up for Three Amigos (1986), the offbeat Western comedy directed by John Landis and written by Steve Martin, Lorne Michaels, and Randy Newman. The trio discusses the film’s blend of Hollywood parody and Mexican melodrama, its troubled production history, and the legacy of its three leads—Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, and Martin Short. They also unpack the movie’s tonal shifts, musical interludes, and whether its cult status is truly earned or simply nostalgic.

Mike and Chris head south of the border for A Matter of Honor, the rare Columbo episode set in Mexico, where the Lieutenant faces bulls, bravado, and a different kind of justice. Ricardo Montalbán plays a retired matador with a secret—and a motive—and Columbo has to navigate a new culture and language barrier while staying one step ahead. The guys dig into the episode’s unique setting, the ethics of honor killings, and how the show handles cultural sensitivity (or doesn’t). Is this an underrated gem or a misstep in a sombrero?
