Airtel Kenya launched a free app for its users

Airtel Kenya has launched a new Progressive Web App (PWA) called Airtel Lite, designed to offer a faster, lighter, and more accessible self-care experience for users. Announced on February 10, the app allows customers to use key services without consuming any data, addressing the growing concerns over data usage and limited smartphone storage. The app provides offline access to essential features, similar to the My Airtel app, but without the need for data bundles.

The main goal of Airtel Lite is to offer a seamless user experience, particularly for those who rely on USSD services. With smartphones becoming increasingly data-conscious, Airtel Lite is positioned as a solution to help customers engage with a variety of services, such as checking balances, recharging, purchasing bundles, sending money, paying bills, and reviewing transaction history, without needing significant storage or data consumption.

Airtel Kenya's Managing Director, Ashish Malhotra, explained that the launch was in response to challenges faced by Kenyan smartphone users, such as insufficient storage and high data usage. Airtel Lite was created to address these issues and improve the overall digital experience for customers. As Kenya transitions towards a fully digital economy, solutions like Airtel Lite play an essential role in fostering the adoption of digital services.

The app also aims to support financial inclusion by providing easy access to mobile banking and digital payments, particularly in underserved and rural areas. By offering a lightweight and user-friendly alternative to traditional methods, Airtel Lite enables users to access mobile services effortlessly, making it easier for individuals who have previously relied on USSD to switch to a more efficient, digital platform.

Airtel’s strategy with this new app aligns with its broader vision of digital empowerment for all Kenyans, ensuring that users, regardless of their device capabilities, can enjoy a wide range of mobile services. Airtel Lite aims to bridge the gap for customers in both urban and rural areas, contributing to Kenya’s ongoing digital transformation. Through this initiative, Airtel Kenya ensures that no customer is left behind in the country's digital journey.

Proposed crocodile jaw dam in Isiolo

Water scarcity has been a persistent challenge in Isiolo County, Kenya, adversely affecting agriculture, livestock, and the daily lives of residents. The semi-arid region faces frequent droughts and unreliable rainfall, exacerbating the struggle for sufficient water supply. To address these pressing issues, the Kenyan government has proposed the construction of the Crocodile Jaw Dam, a project set to transform the county's water infrastructure and improve overall water security.

The Crocodile Jaw Dam, with an estimated budget of KSh 30.9 billion, is poised to become a cornerstone of Isiolo's efforts to combat water scarcity. The project aims to store up to 315 million cubic meters of water, significantly boosting the region's capacity for both agricultural and domestic use. The dam's construction is part of a broader national strategy under the Kenya Kwanza initiative, which seeks to build 100 mega dams and 1,000 small dams across the country.

The project was inspected in early 2024 by Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho and Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan Guyo. During the inspection, Governor Guyo emphasized the dam's potential to drastically improve food security through continuous cropping and enhanced livestock value chains. He highlighted that the dam would not only provide a reliable water source for irrigation but also support industrial and residential water needs, thus fostering economic growth and stability in the region.

Governor Guyo and the project team have made significant progress, including preparing 290 acres for irrigation in areas like Malkadaka, Bulesa, and Ngaremara. This initiative is expected to enhance agricultural productivity and provide a sustainable livelihood for many residents. Moreover, the Crocodile Jaw Dam is anticipated to support climate resilience efforts, helping communities better cope with the impacts of climate change.

Despite the promising outlook, the project faces challenges, particularly in ensuring public participation and addressing any environmental concerns. Governor Guyo has reassured residents that their interests are being considered and that the project will be carried out with transparency and inclusivity. This includes regular consultations with contractors and stakeholders to ensure that the project meets its objectives without compromising the community's welfare.

The Crocodile Jaw Dam represents a significant step forward in addressing Isiolo County's water scarcity issues. By providing a reliable water source, the dam is expected to enhance agricultural productivity, support local industries, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. As the project progresses, it holds the promise of transforming Isiolo into a more resilient and prosperous region, capable of meeting the challenges of climate change and sustaining its population's needs.

Tana River Flood Crises

Tana River County faced severe challenges due to intense flooding. The floods have displaced thousands and created ideal conditions for a cholera outbreak, with over 40 cases reported. The flooding has contaminated water sources, exacerbating the spread of the disease.

Health officials, led by Kenya’s Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, have responded by distributing water purification supplies and other emergency resources. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also supporting these efforts by providing cholera treatment kits and other medical supplies.

The floods have caused significant infrastructural damage, submerging roads, homes, and farmlands, which has disrupted transportation and food supply chains. This has added to the difficulties faced by the local population, many of whom depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. In response, the Kenyan government has allocated funds for flood mitigation and infrastructure repair.

The situation highlights the need for long-term solutions to address the recurring nature of flooding in the region. Experts suggest that measures such as improved flood forecasting, better land-use planning, and investment in resilient infrastructure are essential to mitigate future risks. Additionally, strengthening healthcare systems and improving water and sanitation infrastructure are vital steps toward building resilience in Tana River County.

Community efforts have also been significant in the response. Local leaders and volunteers are assisting displaced residents by providing temporary shelters and distributing essential supplies. Schools and community centers have been repurposed to accommodate those displaced by the floods.

Overall, the situation in Tana River County underscores the importance of coordinated disaster response and preparedness. While immediate relief efforts are crucial, sustainable solutions are necessary to prevent similar crises in the future. Addressing the root causes of flooding and building resilient infrastructure will be key to safeguarding the region against future natural disasters.
