Airtel Kenya launched a free app for its users
Airtel Kenya has launched a new Progressive Web App (PWA) called Airtel Lite, designed to offer a faster, lighter, and more accessible self-care experience for users. Announced on February 10, the app allows customers to use key services without consuming any data, addressing the growing concerns over data usage and limited smartphone storage. The app provides offline access to essential features, similar to the My Airtel app, but without the need for data bundles.
The main goal of Airtel Lite is to offer a seamless user experience, particularly for those who rely on USSD services. With smartphones becoming increasingly data-conscious, Airtel Lite is positioned as a solution to help customers engage with a variety of services, such as checking balances, recharging, purchasing bundles, sending money, paying bills, and reviewing transaction history, without needing significant storage or data consumption.
Airtel Kenya's Managing Director, Ashish Malhotra, explained that the launch was in response to challenges faced by Kenyan smartphone users, such as insufficient storage and high data usage. Airtel Lite was created to address these issues and improve the overall digital experience for customers. As Kenya transitions towards a fully digital economy, solutions like Airtel Lite play an essential role in fostering the adoption of digital services.
The app also aims to support financial inclusion by providing easy access to mobile banking and digital payments, particularly in underserved and rural areas. By offering a lightweight and user-friendly alternative to traditional methods, Airtel Lite enables users to access mobile services effortlessly, making it easier for individuals who have previously relied on USSD to switch to a more efficient, digital platform.
Airtel’s strategy with this new app aligns with its broader vision of digital empowerment for all Kenyans, ensuring that users, regardless of their device capabilities, can enjoy a wide range of mobile services. Airtel Lite aims to bridge the gap for customers in both urban and rural areas, contributing to Kenya’s ongoing digital transformation. Through this initiative, Airtel Kenya ensures that no customer is left behind in the country's digital journey.
