After cheering him on for years, and all the more after the revelation of his kidney cancer, we're gutted by the news of the passing of Nobuo Yamada, a.k.a. NoB, on Aug. 9 at age 61. Some of our most blazing memories from the 17 years of concerts we attended in Japan are the times he took the stage, belting lightning-bolt performances of his songs from Saint Seiya, Boukenger, or Goseiger. Between some songs' verses, he'd spin his mike stand and grin, his gaze sweeping the crowd to meet all the eyes he could as we roared. His reunion with Make-Up on the group's 25th anniversary, at Anime Japan Fes 2009 Fuyu no Jin in Shibuya, was absolutely epic. In grateful memory of NoB, here's our event report of that amazing concert:

Sometimes you need a song to get you through the day. Today is one of those days, and we made a beeline for this, one of the greatest performances we were lucky enough to witness live while in Japan: Monsieur Yoshizaki of Crystal King, belting the movie version of "Ai wo Torimodose!!" in NHK's 2009 edition of its BS Eien no Ongaku - Anime Shudaika Daizenshuu concert!

We have great news to share: Isao Sasaki, 82, hospitalized from mid-January to the end of February while battling acute exacerbation of interstitial pneumonia, was cleared to return to performing just in time for yesterday's Super Robot Spirits 2025 -Stage Terra- concert at Zepp Haneda in Tokyo! Seen here leading encore song "Getta Robo" (he's flanked by MIQ on the left and Mitsuko Horie on the right) to close the show, the legend that fans call "Emperor Isao" sang the Daimos opening theme early on in the concert, and the Grendizer and Gaiking opening themes near its midpoint, before returning to lead the encore, all to huge ovations. A special concert for the 65th anniversary of his debut was announced for July 20 at Zepp Haneda (he'll be joined by Mitsuko Horie, Hironobu Kageyama, Masaaki Endou, and Kentarou Hayami). We're so thrilled, and relieved, that he's back!

Some further info on 82-year-old Isao Sasaki, from the announcement made today on his official web site (https://www5c.biglobe.ne.jp/~isao/top.html): He's currently recovering from acute exacerbation of interstitial pneumonia, after several weeks of hospitalization. He had been admitted to the hospital a week after returning from Thailand in mid-January, and was discharged at the end of February. He's been recovering at home ever since, and said the hospital has told him to refrain from all work until at least the end of April. "Looking back now, it seems amazing that I am still alive," he said. "I can only think that the prayers of the doctors who treated me at the hospital and the nurses who cared for me, that they would somehow save me, must have reached heaven. I am making an effort every day to cherish the life I have been given."
