On 30 July 1935, the very first paperback books were published. There were 10 books with the ubiquitous penguin - orange for fiction, blue for biography and green for crime. Each book cost sixpence. Perplexity tells me that this would be approximately R54.24 (ZAR) in today’s South African currency. Makes you think.

There's an interesting story in our latest issue about the history of transport in the Karoo. 'As you drive through old Karoo towns, you might notice some very wide streets. Not much more than a century ago, you had to be able to do a U-turn driving a wagon and 16 oxen – hence the generous width of the thoroughfares.'
And for petrolheads there's a story about the South African entry into the le Mans Barcelona 24 hour race in September 2024.
