As the virtual reality becomes a major part of our lives, the shift of online audience towards AR is evident. Snapchat being majorly known for the same, is discovering more channels to generate possible revenues keeping in mind their basic structure and offering. Bitmoji characters are one of the most used features of Snapchat. Around 70% of the active users engage with this feature. Taping on this e-commerce opportunity, Snapchat has recently collaborated with Levi’s, where there are 12 curated options from which the users can choose. This is a fun yet an effective way to promote fashion brands as it increases the brand awareness amongst the users.
This feature to dress your bitmoji in different outfits was released an year back by the platform and has led to partnerships with fashion brands as Ralph Lauren and Jordan amongst others. As Facebook and Instagram continue to influence consumer habits, users will expect to have quick links to products that they see being used and can buy directly. It’s interesting to see that Snapchat is adapting to these changes via it’s USP that is AR.

Social media is often known for simplifying lives by making people as well as products accessible more than ever. Snapchat on the same lines has made the world of fantasy available too for it’s users, by creating augmented reality via it’s camera. It is know for it’s filters but the platform expects more from it’s camera.

As per the latest update, now you can use Snapchat’s in- app camera and scan packaged food and wine labels to get it’s nutritional info and tasting notes. Along with these, you can also use the camera to identify plants and dog breeds, solve a math equation, look up Amazon products and Shazam music. Which means, the platform now also makes it simpler for it’s users to access info about things around them. The purpose of Snapchat to introduce this feature is to make their camera even more useful as they build their augmented reality platform more and more.

What are your views on this latest update by Snapchat?

Halloween Special

Snapchat has added more fun to the ways it’s filters function. The social media platform known for it’s creative AR lenses has now added 3D body scan lenses which provides full body tracking functionality. These lenses track your body and adjust to the way you move your camera screen.

These lenses add up to the fun of the halloween and are developed with the purpose of making halloween still interesting and festive by staying home in these unprecedented times. People can turn on the lenses and become whoever they wish to be. As per Snapchat, this is one of the first of its kind AR tool in which the lenses work in both the front and the rear camera alignment.

These AR tools have also created good opportunities for brands to promote themselves via their own AR lenses.

Facebook Watch to give competition to YouTube?

Facebook launches “Topics” and “Featured” sections to it’s Watch, officially. Now you can watch videos of a particular interest by just clicking on that particular topic and exploring only related videos. Facebook Watch, as of now, is not a major competitor of YouTube but as per their recently launched stats their Watch viewers which were around 720 million in June last year has increased upto 1.25 billion viewers this year, which is almost the double.

Facebook has also added “What’s Happening” or “Featured” section in Watch, where people will see selected videos or clips by Facebook that will be reverent to trending subjects, For example: Elections 2020, Emmy Awards, Latest music video from your favourite artists, MLB world series highlights.

In addition to that, Facebook will also be suggesting the most popular clips on the platform as: “Most Loved Videos” or “Most Haha-ed Videos”.

As Instagram celebrated it’s 10th birthday last week, there are a variety of new features that the platform has launched. Let’s take a brief look at it.
- Remember using location stickers? Now you can have look at all the places you’ve visited over the last 3 years all together privately. Although it’s a pretty interesting feature and might make you nostalgic to look back at it again, it’s a reminder of data tracking capacity of Facebook and how things aren’t really private in your life.
- Loving the customised home screens on IOS-14? Well then you’re going to love this new feature by IG. You can now customise the IG app icon! Yes, choose your own icon, how you want it to be appeared on your home screens.
- Love the product being used by the creators you follow, but is difficult to track them down online? Well worry not, Instagram now has added a shopping tags feature that let the creators add the tag on the products they are using in their IGTV video. Testing for the same feature on Reels are ongoing as well.
Instragram has evolved a lot in these 10 years and so are the ways we have started using social media. Pandemic itself has given a whole new definition to the social media and a number of possibilities in which it can be used. Even though social media is what has us all connected in such unprecedented times, it’s quite interesting to think where the social media, is headed!
