Do you think they will succeed in destroying the spirit?

I think they’re going to win. I’m a pessimist, but I’m not a pacifist. I think you ought to take your cuts at them. If you’re going to go down, go down fighting. Give it a try. It seems to me that it’s happening everywhere, so there’s no point in running. Lots of people are looking for a new place, but I don’t think anyone’s found one. You can take the guy out of Aspen, but you can never take Aspen out of the guy. Someplace the battle will be won.

How do you feel now?

"It’s a mixed-up town now. There are a lot of good people and a lot of really bad people. But that’s good. It’s real. At Snowmass and Vail, they try to make it real, but it’s not, it’s like a movie set. The heritage of the old mining days makes Aspen unique. It has something you don’t find often. The people — most of them — have that same individual spirit that the miners had. Now, of course, we have these bad cats that are more interested in success than they are in that spirit." - Tom Benton

Tom Benton integrated strong and powerful graphic symbolism into the political fray of our times. His simple yet monumental approach to what needed to be said gave a voice to those who wished to be seen and heard. He remains a powerful example of commitment in a world gone wrong. - Ralph Steadman, Gonzo Artist

Elizabeth Paepcke was heartbroken at the unintended consequences of Aspen’s success, a sentiment shared by author Peggy Clifford and many others in recent times.

Paepcke once said, "Are we going to kill the golden goose by feeding the animal until its liver becomes distended and we produce a pate which is so rich that none of us can digest it anymore? What price glory?" She told a reporter that Aspen had "become a town of glitz and glamour . . . a nut without a kernel." "My heart," she said, "is broken."

"Peggy Clifford described the rise and fall of our illusions as well as anyone could. She was right in the middle of it and what she writes is true. ... As a writer, what I most appreciate in this book is the clarity and validity of her descriptions of people and times and places. You almost had to be there to know how good the writing is. She was always the chronicler of reality in town. ... She ties Aspen’s fate to America. ... Peggy was in the trenches. She’s the ultimate authority.”
- From the introduction by Hunter S. Thompson written for To Aspen and Back: An American Journey by Peggy Clifford.

A journalist all her life, Peggy Clifford wrote two children’s books, founded and edited a micro-paper, and aimed plenty of sharp words at those in power from her writing desk at her home in Aspen’s West End. She also hosted a popular salon for Aspen’s literati there. After leaving Aspen in 1979, Clifford would go on to passionately defend the community of Santa Monica in the same way. “Peggy believed that the purpose of journalism was to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,” wrote Santa Monica Observer publisher David Ganezer in a May 2017 obituary.

“This wonderful book captures both the political activism and colorful personality of the great Hunter S. Thompson. It’s about his run for sheriff and a whole lot more, including how the freaks and activists of the 1960s helped change towns like Aspen and all of America. Dr. Thompson would be thrilled with this book – and very angry if you didn’t buy it.”

— WALTER ISAACSON, CEO OF THE ASPEN INSTITUTE AND BIOGRAPHER OF STEVE JOBS, ALBERT EINSTEIN AND BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
