Backbone Digital Leaders We're spearheading a revolution at the ballot box and beyond.

Founded in the midst of historic uprisings, elections and a historic pandemic that pushed an unprecedented number of organizations to fully rely on digital mediums, Backbone Digital Leaders was created to meet a crucial moment. Our mission is to spearhead a digital revolution at the ballot box and beyond by training the next generation in digital activism through participation in high impact, high stakes causes.

Ancestor Alice Wong once said, "Advocacy is for all of us."

This is a statement we carry in our work at Backbone.

We lead with the values laid out by Sins Invalid, including a commitment to cross-movement organizing and collective liberation.

We cannot achieve collective liberation by staying within a bubble.

We must reach out, help welcome folks to the decision-making table, and build up our movements together.

This year, we brought together a small cohort of community organizers, business owners, and students to learn about disability justice, accessible digital content, and AI's impact on the digital landscape.

This cohort included Tanuke “Tangi” Smith. Ms. Tangi is the founder and executive director of the Texas Federation of the People Foundation.

Texas Federation of the People Foundation is a Houston-based nonprofit committed to rebuilding lives, restoring hope, and expanding access to opportunities. The tools used in this intensive will help Ms. Tangi ensure more people are able to access her organization’s efforts.

Last week, we successfully completed our third annual Backbone Digital Accessibility Intensive.

For the last three years, Backbone has celebrated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) anniversary with our annual intensive.

This year, we were honored to host our training with a grant from the Disability Inclusion Fund from . We also partnered with Brit Holmes from .

We offer this training because we believe that true power and liberation come when our movements and spaces are accessible.

The third annual Backbone Digital Accessibility Intensive is here!

We’re honored to host this training with support from the Disability Inclusion Fund grant from Borealis Philanthropy.

For this year's training, Backbone is partnering with Did Juno. Did Juno is an anti-racist, inclusive, and accessible communications and marketing firm led by Brit Holmes.

We finished our first two weeks by hearing from two amazing experts, Dom Kelly and Dr. Rua M. Williams. They shared insights on perceivable and robust content.

Dom Kelly is the CEO of New Disabled South. New Disabled South is a disabled-led organization building political power across the South.

Dr. Williams is an assistant professor in the School of Applied and Creative Computing at Purdue University. They also authored the book we're grounding our training in: Disabling Intelligences: Legacies of Eugenics and How We are Wrong about AI.

We can't wait to continue our exploration of accessibility and AI over the next two weeks with our cohort and next speakers. We’ll share more about what we learn soon!

We celebrate Lorde's legacy and continue this work by helping to unlock collective power. We gain more people when they can join the decision-making table.

At Backbone, we believe accessibility unlocks collective power and opens new possibilities.

By centering disabled perspectives and embracing inclusive design, we can create stronger movements and more welcoming digital communities.

These same values guide our work in creating accessible digital spaces.

We're continuing to imagine new possibilities, and that starts by transforming the choices we make today. Accessibility has to be a part of the future building. We cannot design a future that does not include everyone.

That's why this year's Backbone Digital Accessibility Intensive will bring together organizers, communicators, and creative individuals to explore accessibility and AI.

We are extending our application due date.

Over the last week, we’ve received a lot of interest in this year’s Backbone Digital Accessibility Intensive.

We got a lot of emails over the weekend. While we are going through the emails we received, we are keeping the application open while we respond.

That means you have more time to finish your application if your application was missing from the pile.
